How did I miss this? I read the name of this thread and thought to myself, "That sounds familiar."
If anybody was confused: I call it a mini-game because it's a separate activity within the game that's not the main game. I guess you could call adventure/campaign design a mini-game too.
When it comes to teaching people about the game, I know this is counter-intuitive, but I really think it's better to go (1) role-playing (main game), (2) character creation, (3) adventure/campaign design.
If they don't like (3) then they shouldn't DM. If they don't like (2) they can get people to help them out. If they don't like (1) though they probably need to find another hobby...
