I think if you want to make crossbows a little more powerful, don't have firing a crossbow provoke an AoO. Giving a crossbow a 5 foot reach is very powerful, and I would suggest at least making the ability to make melee attacks with a crossbow or any other ranged weapon a feat of some sort.
