Charisma Based Characters

Well...I don't think there's an Elf with a Con bonus, but there are more than a few with no Con penalty.
Con elf - think about it. There's a reason I didn't capitalize it above and called it a prestige class. ;)

Ah, ok. :) I haven't seen one so far but since WotC is apparently contractually obligated to publish new elf material in every book, it's probably just a matter of time.

How come there are no basic races that get bonuses to CHA?

There are no PHB races with bonuses to any of the mental stats. Maybe they figured that it would have been too big a bonus to caster classes?

Not only would it make that race the slam-dunk for those spell-casting classes, it would also allow a character to possibly have a 20 in their spellcasting ability, which gives two bonus first level spells (quite a boost for a first-level character).

I tend to think of them as Int elves and Cha elves, myself.

Hehe, yeah, they've gone a bit overboard with all the racial variants, but the elves are not worse than all the other, really. At least Star Elves have a fairly unique background and flavor. :)

And I actually think it's cool that some elves have plus to Int and Cha, because that makes them naturally talented (in a meaningful way) for arcane magic, something they really should be.

Man, I totally misread the heading of this thread as "Christmas Based Characters". I guess I've been seeing that word so much lately, that my brain just saw Ch... and filled in the rest.

And here I was expected to see a semi-humorous, albeit rules-related, discussion of elves, reindeer and overweight, bearded red-robed mages.

Oh well, Happy Holidays to everyone!

Personally I'm all for whatever races people find with bonuses to int/wis/cha, the ability bonus system of the D20 game increased melee effectiveness and HP considerably compared to AD&D, but the spells were virtually unchanged in their basic power levels. IMO wizards and sorcerers got the shaft since they rely entirely on obsolete spells.
