Charm Person

Simple question...

Does a charmed person actually KNOW they've been charmed? Say you've used them favorably, but without doing anything 'stupid'?

Thanks ahead

what if it fails

Actually, I'm curous about this for both the case of the charm suceding and failing, and for the various different ways of charming.

There the spell (which you could rule requires at the very least a spellcraft check), the psionic power (seems like it should be harder to detect), and then spell-like abilities for various creatures (seems like should be the hardest to detect).

I remember seeing somewhere that the sage or someone said if you make your save you always know that someone tried to charm you (or tried to do something to you that you resisted). But I may be hallucinating about this.

Are there actual rules to cover this, or is it up to the DM? It seems that Charm is a lot less useful if they always know.

Re: what if it fails

The general rule in the PHB is that if you succeed at a save, you always know that someone just tried to magic you up. But you don't know exactly what they were trying to do.

And succeed or fail, knowing the exact magic that's been attempted (or successfully cast) depends on a Spellcraft check. So if the charmee sees the wizard casting the spell, and is himself a wizard, he could certainly know what's been cast on him.

An interesting scenario would be a wizard who's been charmed, but knows he's been charmed. Personally, I'd start discussing all my decisions with my familiar, since chances are it wouldn't be charmed as well...

*points to the post above* If he's a fighter with Spellcraft :D

However, a wizard who knows he's been charmed may very well doubt that. After all, the charmer is his best friend! He would NEVER cast such a horrible spell on him, wouldn't he? Clearly, he must have mis-identified that spell!
