D&D 5E Check Out The Full Monsters of the Multiverse Cover Art

The wraparound cover art for January's Monsters of the Multiverse -- an updated compilation of existing D&D monsters -- has been revealed. The cover features an astral dreadnaught, the same monsters which adorned AD&D's Manual of the Planes in 1987.

The front cover had been revealed previously, but this is the clearest picture yet of the full art piece by Greg Rutkowski. Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse is part of the 3-book gift set which also includes Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, all together in a slipcase.

Monsters of the Multiverse is "a treasure trove of creature related material from previous products compiled into one book and updated." Improvements are based on feedback, rebalancing monsters with new and old art.

The book contains over 250 monsters, and 30 playable races, including all of the setting agnostic races that have been published outside the Player's Handbook.

Some content from Witchlight, Fizban's, and Strixhaven was influenced by Monsters of the Multiverse.

The books is available first in the gift set, but will also be available separately later in the year.

I like the cover, but I'm not sure about the book. From what I understand, it's just reprints of existing monsters with updated stats. If the monsters were all new, or collected from the various adventure books (that I don't have), I'd consider it, but I think this will be a pass for me (of course, said the same thing about Witchhaven and Fizban, and ended up with both of those...sigh).

I’m curious about the dragon looking creature behind the Astral Dreadnought. My first thought was a Red Dragon as the Githyanki are often known to ride special Red Dragons called Pact Dragons, and both creatures are often seen roaming the Astral much like the Dreadnought.

Though Red dragons are in the MM, not in any of the supplement monster books, so maybe it’s another creature?

I'm interpreting this as 30 heritages and, more importantly, 250 playable races! It's gonna be a party y'all!

By the way, the MoM image is actually background-sized, for those of you still looking at the Windows logo or some serene, grassy knoll.

Given that the printer that Wizards of the Coast uses often misprints their books to be upside-down, something like that is almost definitely going to happen to someone's copy of this book. (I had it happen to my first D&D 5e DMG.)

It looks really shiny, almost like a Gem Dragon, but given that Sardior, the only Ruby Dragon in D&D 5e, is dead it's probably jut a Red Dragon, potentially with a Githyanki riding it. Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes even mentions that Githyanki will occasionally hunt down Astral Dreadnoughts, so it could be a Pact Dragon Scout heading back to a Githyanki city/outpost to bring reinforcements to take on the Dreadnought.
