Just as a sidenote, I live about 15 minutes away from the City of God, and the movie is pretty accurate in its depiction of it.

It has climbed to the top of the brazilian box office, and garnered amazing reviews everywhere it went.

Register another huge thumbs up for this movie... Very minor spoilers below.

So Claudio I was wondering, the kids at the end (it was back in Feb. that I saw it in NY so my memory is fuzzy, I think they called themselves "Red Brigade") did they go on to become the next major gang?

Any minor interesting details that a local/Brazilian would pick up but that foreigners wouldn't notice?

SPOILER SPACE

and all that jazz

Yep, the "Red Brigade" is the criminal gang that won't go away...

The facts depicted are fictional, but the screeplayers (and the book's author before them) did a fine job in throwing those facts over a real-life backdrop. Brazil's version of Gangs of New York, y'know?

If you liked that, keep your eyes peeled for the next major release, Carandiru, which depicts a doctor's daily life as a voluntary at a huge brazilian prison where 111 inmates were killed by the police during a riot some 10 years ago. The prison has since been imploded.

Looking forward to it. This is one film I'll definitely get the DVD to. It was shown at the film fstival here and ended up on many people's top ten list. It was #2 on Ebert's top ten list last year; well-deserved.
