The young man grins, nods to Ruud and moves to stand next to Thorne. With a rueful shrug, he leans foward, speaking so softly that only his employer can hear. He indicates in turn the various adventurers who chased him, pointing finally to Payne and Kol.Drerek said:Ruud looks up, "Hey kid. You run too fast." This is said with a smile.
Thorne listens impassively. The only sign of surprise he gives is a raised eyebrow at whatever the youth says about the last two. After a moment he nods to the two of them, then turns and organizes a drink for the runner. The young man accepts it gratefully, and moves to sit at a table out of the way. He winks at the assembled group as he does.
Once again Thorne examines the adventurers in the taproom. He purses his lips before saying reflectively, "Our reactions to unexpected encounters reveal much about us. I came, looking for a group who would be solid and dependable, not given to flightiness, weighing the situation before responding. Many of you passed that test, for you didn't suddenly disappear out the door, following a young man who offered no explanation, no information beyond a vague excitement and a mysterious reference to unseen strangers. This, I thought, would be enough. Caravan guards need a level of dependability if they're to be effective."
"And yet those of you who followed Jendral demonstrated traits that are admirable, too. A willingness to acknowledge one's weaknesses, and to play to one's strengths," - here he looks at Taelythenihel - "is a valuable character trait. The concern for the wider picture, and especially to monitor the temper of prospective clients," - Ciprinus here gets the nod - "is far from useless to a merchant. Likewise, the courage to admit one's limitations and to get on with the job at hand," - Valdaris and Ruud this time - "bespeaks a strength of character I'd be foolish to ignore."
"And as for those who can pace the wind, and who can think quickly and creatively under pressure," - the merchant goes so far as to essay a short bow to Jendral's captors - "they are not to be underestimated!"
"Unfortunately, the fact remains that I have work for only four of you. It is not demanding. I fervently hope it will not be exciting - but still I need four skilled adventurers to guard my cargos as far as Ravensdale, and back again."
"Be assured though, those of you who are not successful today - I have a long memory, and I do not forget a face. There will be other offers of work - you can count on it. Now, I say again, who wants a job?"
[sblock=Adventure details, for those who didn't see them previously]I’m recruiting for a short adventure to help cater for the large number of PCs in the RDI at the moment. This adventure for four first level characters is based on the Side Trek “The Little People” which appeared in Dungeon Magazine #67. Any party mix would be viable, although some combinations may require more careful play than others.[/sblock]
