Geanavue: The Stones of Peace is a pretty good city book from Kenzer and Company. The RumourQUEST system in the book comes in handy too.

Freeport is good if you like a swashbuckling environment.
Bluffside is good if you want a huge city in a high magic environment.
Geanavue is good if you want a low magic city in which the adventurers are not the center of the story.

All three products are excellent, IMO, so it just depends on the style of game you want to play.

You might also try and check the city books from the Scarred Lands setting...they put a definite twist on the standard cities :)

True but even I, a die hard SL fan, must bow to the superiority of both Bluffside and Freeport. Both provide a LOT for very little and the people involved, from Hal and company to Chris Pramas and Co, REALLY breath life into both of their products.

Course if you like a city run by strange scientific necromancers...well Hollowfaust has something for you then. ;)

*didn't care that much for Geanavue* I much prefered Bluffside or Freeport. But then that's just me huh? ;)

I don't have Bluffside, so I cannot comment, but Freeport is a fine city to consider. It really works best as an island port seperate from a controlling country or government. I just got the new Freeport NPC book too, and this really adds some flavor.

Geanavue is a fine read, but seems a bit more daunting to try and USE. Most of the locations are buried in the text with no seperate headers, and difficult to reference.

The new Adventure Path series in Dungeon Magazine might be perfect for starting a new campaign (even if you don't run the adventures) . The city of Cauldron will be the center of the campaign, and the most recent issue has a beautiful pull out map, and lots of description.

Cauldron should get a lot more detail added each issue too.

I'm definitely dropping this city into my Campaign.

This is an unlabeled version of the map in the magazine

edit: added some detail... blah blah blah

I have Geanavue and Bluffside.

Bluffside is more -fantastic- and presents more of a frontier town on top of an archeology site feel. If you use it, you have to do some close examination of several new races that have a suspiscious lack of ECLs (one got adjusted in errata, but others were left alone).

Geanauve has more of a sense of history and intertwining political intrigue. It makes me think of Venecian traders and the kinds of families that inspired tales like Romeo and Juliet.

Both are highly detailed and give you a lot to work with, but they have very different moods.

While there is no 3rd Ed expansion available for it, Waterdeep in the Forgotten Realms was an extremely well detailed city. I have had a campaign running in it for many years and there is still so much my PCs have not even had a chance to experience. Probably even more detailed than the city of Greyhawk actually.

While these are all 2nd ed suppliments, there actual game mechanicals are minimal and easily converted. Recommended sources for a really detailed game are the following (can buy them as ESDs from www.svgames.com if you can't find a hard copy anywhere (in order of necessity):

* City of Splendors - Revised Boxed Set (1st - 2nd Ed)
* Volo's Guide to Waterdeep - a must for detailed games
* Ruins of Undermountain - the mega dungeon below the city
* City System - Original Boxed Set
* Skullport - an underground lawless city in undermountain

Optional Extras:
* Waterdeep and the North - has some info not in boxed sets
* Ruins of Undermountain II - the deeper levels
* Waterdeep Trail Map - Maps of the surrounding area

Modules 2ed:
* (Lvl 7-9) UM1 - The Lost Level
* (Lvl 7-10) UM2 - Maddgoths Castle
* (Lvl 10-14) UM3 - Stardock
* (Lvl 10-12) FRE3 - Waterdeep

3rd Edition Books:
* Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3e
* Lords of Darkness 3e
* Faiths and Pantheons 3e

I would very highly recommend Waterdeep, plus you have the rest of Faerun to explore...
