Clarification on Push needed

I need some clarification, preferably a reputable source, that the attacker gets to choose which square they push their target into, as long as that square moves the target further away from the attacker.

"YOU push the target..."

That should be clear enough. It's not "The target forcibly shifts away from you..."

Not quite sure what you're looking for. The person doing the pushing does indeed pick where the pushee goes. It's Forced Movement, not Forced Go-Wherever-You-Want.

What alternative reading do you propose exists? And how does that alternative reading work with Slide?

-Hyp.

I agree with the adjudication, it's just that a DM has adjudicated otherwise, and the Push description does not explicitly state that you choose where the target goes, only that the target must move away from you.

PHB 57 said:
If a hit grants you the ability to compel the target
to move, whether through forced movement or teleportation,
you can move it any number of squares up
to the number specified (or not move it at all, if you so
choose).
That's about as good as you're gonna get...

So again, I ask how the alternative interacts with Slide?

If I Slide a target three squares, does he feel that this means the target can move three squares in any direction, and I have no influence over where he goes?

-Hyp.

Presumably the DM would ask for a general intent of sliding direction or somesuch.

Bottom line is, though ... forced movement is something you do.
DM != you
Might as well let the DM decide whom you shoot with your eldritch blast.

I'm looking really hard but struggling to find where it was exactly I asked about or mentioned or even inferred anything relating to or even could be construed as asking about, slide.

Nope. Nothing. Maybe you'd like to fork the thread into another discussion about slide and how it relates to push?

Kzach, he's offering you an argument that could be used to show that your DM's interpretation is silly. Figure out where the point is going, then go to your DM about it. There's a chance it'll change his mind.

Which helps not one iota.

I asked a very specific question. If the DM or I had an issue with how slide works, then I would've mentioned it. And even if I didn't, it's fairly safe to assume that given that push, pull and slide are all under the one banner of forced movement, that the DM has already adjudicated on slide if he's adjudicated on push.

As it stands, slide is utterly irrelevant to the question asked and the issue at hand, even if you used circuitous logic required to associate the question with it, it's still completely unrelated to the answer.

If it said under slide specifically that the attacker causing the sliding effect chooses exactly where the target moves, that absolutely nothing to do with push.

So again, I ask, where was it that I mentioned slide at all in my original post?
