Clarification on Push needed

Push: When you push a creature, each square you move it must place it farther away from you.

For every X in Push X, if the X position of the creature is further away from the attacker than the X-1 position, the Push is legal.

If the DM was supposed to control the direction, it would say so in the rules. If the direction had to remain consistent, it would say so in the rules.

I seriously have no idea why this conversation is still going on.

If I understand the rules correctly, this is what a 1 square push could look like:

E

Y

Y is the pusher, E is being pushed. The yellow squares are legitimate moves, the red squares are illegitimate moves.

Really given the emphasis of the game designers on the corner of square to corner of other square affects whether or not you can see/hit X, there's a strong argument that you can start in the top left of your square and move the target directly away from you the square to your top right.

Of course you could always go by what the rule says....

Do all of the PC's want it to work this way? If it's all of you vs. the DM he should be gracious and concede unless there's some other reason we don't know about.

re

I run push the following way:

I set up the PC mini and the enemy mini facing each other. If the PC does a push, I allow him to push the monster away from him with a choice of three squares for direction starting from the origin square he is facing and the two squares on each side of the origin square. Once he has chosen which direction he will push in I allow him to push the enemy away from up to the limit of his push squares. Usually that is straight back but I allow for minor turning because I could see it happening in a five foot square.
