Clarification Question on Basic Attacks

Cheesepie said:
No, rogues still use STR for melee basic attacks. Only their powers use DEX.
OK, thanks Cheesepie! I guess that means that it will take a Feat to switch.

It's intended I'm sure. But look for the 4E equivalent of Weapon Finesse in the new Martial book.
Gaaah. I was afraid the need for splatbooks was going to arise soon. I didn't figure on its happening before official release though. . . .

Nope. No feats. Rogues don't really rely on their basic attacks. They're really meant to move through the battle and dole out buckets of damage and conditions rather than wait for opportunities to come their way.

Out of curiosity, can any one who's got the books answer this for me?

The rogue pregen from World Wide D&D Day has all his powers as basic attacks plus the power benefit. IE the melee ones are STR based, not DEX based. I was pretty sure that the Rogue's powers are all "finessed" and are DEX based even when they are melee attacks.

Can anyone confirm?
Is this yet another mistake made on the pregens?

'Cause by my math he should have +6 vs AC (Dex 16 + Rapier 3) where he's got +4 (Str 12 + Rapier +3) Yes, he's got the feat for the rapier.
I get that he'd have +4 for his basic (+5 with the dagger) but I thought all his powers were Dex based.

I statted up a dragonborn rogue and then leveled it up through level 30. I can't recall seeing a single class power that didn't trigger off of dexterity.

His basic attacks, though, are strength based.

So I guess we have yet another mistake-filled pregen. I really don't want to offend the people who make these things but, honestly, I'm pretty sure I know less about the game than they do, and I can spot mistakes after glancing at the character sheet ONCE.

I can confirm that KotS Pregen uses Dex for the "Sly Flourish", My Girlfriends Half-elf Rogue's Favourite move.

And all the other Rogue Powers use Dex in KotS

Don't worry about rogue melee attacks. The four Rogue at-wills are:

1) Deft Strike — Dex vs. AC, 1[W]+Dex modifier damage, you must use a crossbow, light blade, or sling. You can move two squares before using the attack.

2) Piercing Strike — Dex vs. Reflex, 1[W]+Dex modifier damage, you must use a light blade.

3) Riposte Strike — Dex vs. AC, 1[W]+Dex modifier damage, you must use a light blade, if your target attacks you before the start of your next turn you get an immediate Strength-based interrupt attack against that target.

4) Sky Floursh — Dex vs. AC, 1[W]+Dex modifier+Cha modifer damage, you must use a crossbow, light blade, or sling.
