Class Help

First Post
Im new here so sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

I currently have a lv3 rogue and was thinking about multiclassing monk.
Im an elf, and my base stats without racial modifiers are:
Str-13
Con-15
Wis-9
Dex-18
Int-15
Cha-14
For my feats I took two-weapon fighting and weapon finesse.

My party consist of a cleric, wizard, paladin, ranger(bow), and ranger(dw).

My DM says that I am free to change any part of my character, from stat disterbution to changing my current lvs. I have the PH, song and silence, complete adventuer, complete warrior, complete divine, and complete arcane to work with. Anything else would have to be approved by the DM first. I would like to stay as an elf or half-elf because that is what my whole party consist of, but I don't half to.

What would be the best path for me to take as a wanna-be rogue/monk or is the combo just a bad idea?

It's a sub-optimal combo.

Monk is interesting but weak; there's no synergy between it's various abilities. Worse, it requires a hefty investment to get anything out of it. Unless you're playing Gestalt, more than 2 levels of monk is a waste of time.

I'd take a look at some of the Rogue build options, especially with a nice focus on Use Magic Device (that skill can get ridiculous with appropriate magic item access) and skills appropriate to your campaign's threats (movement skills if dangerous terrain shows up a lot, social skills if talking is important, stealth if you sneak around, trap skills if those are important, etc.).

Best of luck.

What are you attempting to accomplish? If you are just looking to boost your combat skills, rogue/fighter is a much better combination than rogue/monk. Those bonus combat feats for the first couple of levels of fighter come in handy.

If you are doing it for roleplaying reasons, because you think it would be a cool PC, that is a whole different story. As ValhallaGH pointed out though, it is a sub-optimal build.

It's a sub-optimal combo.
Ignore him. He is clearly a munchkin with no regard for roleplaying.

Rogue/Monk is a fantastic idea because it is so flavorful. The only way to possibly improve it is to take levels in Duelist and finish off with Shadowdancer.

Ahem. Now that I've gotten that out of my system, I recommend

Rogue1/Ranger2
Str-13
Con-18
Wis-9
Dex-15
Int-15
Cha-14

Feats: Weapon Finesse, Combat Expertise, Two Weapon Fighting (Ranger).

Elf isn't a great race due to the Con penalty, but there are some variant elf races that switch around the penalty. Desert Elf puts it into Strength, while Wild Elf puts it into Int. Strength is less important to you than Int, so you may want to look into the Desert Elf.

Thank You for the replies. I have seen both good and bad post from people. So if you think this combo is a good idea what lvs should i take in each class to get the best result, and if you think it is a bad idea what prestige classes should i look at instead, and are my stats destributed well for the idea or should I swap them around?

Dandu, you are always so helpful in pointing out the relevant online "handbooks" - would you please show us your lawful, unarmed rogue handbook? Perhaps it is called the "Squish Handbook" or, based on the ever so popular spelling of rogue, maybe the "Mouge Handbook"?

Mouge:
<Hides>
<Sneaks>
<Flurries> (all misses)

Monster: enjoys breeze, smacks down mouge.

Rebuild as a drow wizard or gish. That'll give the party something to think about.

Sorry Dandu i forgot about your post it has been helpful. But are there any other people with helpfull suggestions? I want to play something that is different from the rest of my party and lets me bring something to the table that they cant. I have one of the lowest damage rates in my party and me DM makes it so even with a 10 search skill i can't find most of his traps. I want to keep my rogue abilities to some point.
