Class Knowledge Skills

The only thing in T&B regarding this issue is how to decide which of Spellcraft _or_ Knowledge (arcana) to use in a given situation. The unstated assumption is that these are exclusive skills -- one or the other applies, but not both.

Ok, so I can't remember where I saw it. I *do* remember something where they listed the DC for one Knowledge skill and then a higher DC for another Knowledge skill (but not as related to the topic at hand). Maybe it was in a published adventure.

Anyway, I don't think it's too unreasonable to allow someone who has, let's say Knowledge: Local History to be able to learn something about a famous magical sword used in the area or someone with Knowledge: Arcana to get the same information, but with different DCs.

I don't think anyone is advocating adding skills and rules to the game willy-nilly. I think they are just stating they would be flexible about Knowledge skills and DCs to gather information.

Don't worry about it IceBear.

I have seen examples as well. But I have not be sufficiently motivated by this debate to actully start turning pages.

I think that arguement has run its course.

You are, of course, to the point and accurate.

Thanks

... except hunter of the dead, which is what this thread is about in the first place. Note that even the undead-related PrCs in T&B (pale master and true necromancer) don't have a Knowledge (undead) requirement. It's a one-off thing that Monte came up with, and with any luck, it'll die out.

You do have things like the Elemental Savant PrC that requires Knowledge: Planes. Unfortunately, this is not on the Sorcerer class list, so it takes a 13th level Sorcerer to enter a class open to a 5th level Wizard.

If there were feats to make some skills into class skills this wouldn't be such a problem.

I don't see why Knowledge (religion) or Knowledge (arcana) couldn't have been an adequate substitute. This isn't GURPS, where every discipline known to man (and some that are unknown) has to be represented by its own individual skill.

Knowledge (undead) defaults to INT-4, Knowledge (arcana)-3 or Knowledge (religion)-2 :p
