Class Pre-Reqs and Levelling-Up?

True but it could also apply to BAB, Feats or Skill Requirements.

From the 3.5 SRD:

"Unlike the basic classes, characters must meet Requirements before they can take their first level of a prestige class. The rules for level advancement apply to this system, meaning the first step of advancement is always choosing a class. If a character does not meet the Requirements for a prestige class before that first step, that character cannot take the first level of that prestige class."

Errr... wait. Am I totally confused? That's what I was trying to illustrate in as short a post as possible :). Although the example given in the first post is an ability advancement, it could just have easily have been BAB, a feat, or skill ranks advancement. The answer stays the same regardless.

Actually the first thing that happens at characte advancement is character-level based benefits then class benefits.

In the example given, the character advances, and using his character-level based benefits increases his ability score to meet the PR requirement. He can take the PR class.

The examples given refer to skill rank prerequisites for feats, etc.

Under feats and prequisites (I posted this on another thread yesterday) in 3.5 you can take them at the same time.

The reasoning that character level based benefits are the first to be gained are specified under gaining Int. When a character increases his Int such that he gains an increased modifier (i.e., more skill points) he is immediately eligible to use that increase for the class he chooses at that character level.

If that were true, then a character attaining 6th level would be able to choose a feat - a 6th-character-level benefit - and then use that feat to qualify for a Prestige Class.

But that's specifically disallowed.

As quoted above, "The first step of advancement is always choosing a class.

Increasing an ability score is a step of advancement; since the first step is always choosing a class, increasing an ability score must necessarily be a later step.
