Classic characters--would they work in your game?

Been thinking about the whole "Warduke in Dungeon" thing, and how cool it is that they're bringing him back--with stats, no less.

But I was wondering, how many of you would actually use him?

Obviously, it's not a big deal if your players aren't old-school enough to recognize the character. But if they are, if you've got fond memories of the toys, or the cartoon, or what have you...

Would you be able to take it seriously? Could you accept the presence of Warduke without it throwing off your suspension of disbelief? Or would there be too much of "Oh, I remember him!" or "I can't believe you actually use him!" or "Man, since when is Warduke a {Insert name of world/campign here} character?"

This came to mind when I was trying to decide if I'd be able to use him at any point in the future, and it occurred to me that I honestly didn't know if I could. Certainly not in my current campaign--his style doesn't mesh with the world, or at least the story--but I'd like to at some point. I just dunno if my players could take it seriously...

No place, no purpose, no feeling of connection to the worlds I run.

I had never even heard of this "Warduke" until I read the thread. I've been gaming since 1976, BUT I stopped playing D&D before it became AD&D.

I'd rather have characters that belong in my own worlds than imports from someone elses'.

I wouldn't use him, mostly cos I think it's a bit silly. Cool but silly.

But I've had desires to use other characters from TV, literature etc in my games. Inigo Montoya for example. But I can't decide whether or not the players will giggle, and it will kinda suck, or they'll think it's cool.

You've considered using Inigo Montoya but you think Warduke is silly?

I've been trying to come up with ways to get him into my game since I heard about his write up in Dungeon.

Here is the Warduke fig I had

Here is a link to a page that has the entire series from '83.

He was a main bad guy in the DnD cartoon series from the early 80s.

I know, but Warduke is from a bad cartoon. Inigo Montoya is from a fantastic, funny book. Mostly it was the idea of a revenge obsessed duelist I liked.

Ok I can understand that. I think Warduke is cool because he looks evil and has a rad name. I don't even remember him in the cartoon.

Ok, I can get that. I like Warduke because he looks neat and has a cool name and because my knowledge of him predates my actual playing of D&D by a good 10 years. I don't even remember him in the cartoon.

All I remember is Hank and his forcebow.

Now I want stats for a forcebow!
