Claymores

Not that I am overflowing with disposable income or anything, but I was thinking of picking up a replica of a Scottish Claymore sometime in the not-too-distant future. There are a ton of companies on line that sell such things, but I hear that their quality varies considerably. For example, I have heard tales of very poor quality steel that does not return to its original shape if flexed, as well as folks selling weapons that are very poorly balanced.

Anyone have any good or bad experiences with any of the museum replica shops? Any recommendations on what other quality measures to look for?

Thanks,

I've yet to try a museum replica myself because of how expensive those things can be. A high quality Claymore can go for eight hundred dollars for example.

If I had the moiney to burn though I'd be buying them.

ANother thing to look out for is to check the laws in your area that deals with owning such things. You might need asome kind of permit or it might be completely illegal, such as where I'm at. Where I live it's ilelgal to own these kinds of blades.

Are you serious? Total garbage is more like it!

Stay away from that site.

Before buying a sword, go to this site and educate yourself:

http://swordforum.com

(Angus Trim and another forge sell their swords through the above site . . . although the site is best known for its forums. If you have questions, ask at that forum. You will receive knowledgable replies.)

If you are looking for a decent two-hander, go here:

http://www.armor.com/

Their claymore is here:

www.bugei.com also sells European swords:

Bugei is best known for their Japanese swords, but they also sell European swords through their "Ancient Edge" store. Ancient Edge is here: www.ancientedge.com

Angus Trim is a respected smith. Check out this site:

Barcode, I don't follow the makers as closely as I used to, but if you want the best advice go to the Sword Forum Intl.

http://www.swordforum.com/

Join the discussion group there and ask the people who live, eat and breathe this stuff.

Cheers,

A'koss.

I've got a fairly extensive sword collection, and I've never had any major complaints with Museum Replicas. They're not the best swords out there, but they're quite good. Usable quality. And their prices are quite reasonable for the quality.

I've had some really good experiences with Kris Cutlery as well, in terms of the quality of their product. The single best piece in my collection is a longsword I got from them. Sadly, they don't offer that precise model any more.

Let me know where you end up going, and how the quality is. I've wanted to add a claymore to my collection for quite some time myself, but every time I have that kind of money available, I find something else I want more...

I'm betting you're not planning on using this claymore to kill Scots or Englishmen. If you just want one that looks pretty I'd go for one of the relatively inexpensive ones. There's just no reason to spend 800 bucks on a decoration. Unless of course you really really want to spend that much.
