Quick question... Is there a Cleric domain that gives Summon Monster as domain spells? I'm making a Riftwarden NPC Cleric for my party and want to have access to Summon Monster as domain spells to make his countersummoning easier.

Thanks!

I only saw some with them at higher levels...
Chaos, Evil, Good, Law (that alignment only) at 9th
Darkness (Shadows only) at 5th
Frog (Froghemoth only) at 9th

Seems like a pretty reasonable domain to make and add as a house rule though... 3.5 apparently had a summoner domain to model it from/justify it with: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20040502a&page=3

Well, that being the case and I don't want to houserule something yet, what which deities do you s'pose would fit for a Cleric who focuses on abjuration with an added emphasis on counter-summoning and banishing/dismissing summoned creatures?

I'm thinking of someone with the Void, Stars Dark Tapestry domain, since they're tied to the fabric that binds all the planes together. At least that's what I'm lead to believe from the Void Elementalist School of Magic.

But there's a problem since many of those domains are evil. And not just evil... but EVIL. Like CTHULHU-EVIL. Since I'm making this NPC to work as the party's healer while at the same time being more than just band-aids with his Riftwarden abilities, an Evil deity isn't gunna cut it.

I suppose I could go for Azathoth (CN) or Black Butterfly (CG), but I was hoping for either NG or TN.

Does anybody have any suggestions themselves for good deity picks for a Riftwarden? I'd really like to hear your thoughts!

Thank you!

Do they have to be gods that officially have that domain? Desna seems like an obvious one to give the Stars Domain too (stars are in her portfolio and are related to some of her names), but that wouldn't give you the Dark Tapestry power you want. Would Dark Tapestry be a good domain for a cleric of Nethys?

The rules let you have one without a deity, would that be easier? You could have one who is powered by the universal energy bleed off of the battle between the universe and the great old ones... and who has been driven a bit of their rocker by it. (Dark Tapestry and Wards domains?)

Oracle would also fit the flavor pretty well, and in general I find spontaneous casters are easier to run as NPCs.

I have a few reasons for opting to NPC a Cleric.
  1. They're my absolute favorite class, dating back to when "Elf" was a class
  2. The group is in desperate need of a Healer

I decided to go with Keltheald because I read somewhere that his worshipers believe the natural formations of the land reflect the glory of the celestial planes. He gives me the Sun and Whimsey domains. I'm going to say that the Alignment Channel feat augments the Sun's channel ability, which will increase the DC against outsiders of the alignment chosen as well as Undead. Since he likes the natural world to reflect the celestial planes, I'm going to say that his Clerics believe that Outsiders should stay where they are from and shouldn't interfere with the events of the Material Plane.

Whimsey further augments the Clerics channel, giving it a 33% chance to roll an additional D6. (50% chance to roll the standard amount, and a 17% chance to roll one fewer than normal). This means that 1/3rd of the time, he'll deal an extra d6 damage to an Outsider who he isn't able countersummon as a Riftwarden.

Maybe it's a stretch, but I think it works.

Additionally, by having a Riftwarden in the party, it means that a significant number of my enemies' who try to summon additional creatures into the battle won't be able to. And that means less work for me as a DM :)
