Cleric Domains

Uruush

First Post
We are starting a new campaign soon with a 25 point buy and 1st level characters No one else wants to play a Cleric, so I'm going to create my first. My DM is probably going to use the FR pantheon in a homebrew campaign. I'm wondering what domains people think are good. I'm leaning towards a Plant/Protection cleric of Chauntea. Plant for access to Entangle, and later, Barkskin. Protection because I like the domain ability, and I'm considering making a cleric with an 8 STR and 8 DEX so I can put as many points as possible into WIS, CON, and CHA. The idea would be I would often cast Sanctuary, and never try to attack anyone, instead healing and casting buffs in combat. We'll be 3.5 edition, if that matters. But since I've never made a cleric before, I thought I'd poll this board for good ideas.

Thanks. :)

I'd choose your god based on what fits your character. The domains aren't as important because you can still memorize any spell you want in normal slots just have a few extra that would fit with that gods domains. If you still feel they are a big deal then look at the extra abilities and spells you feel would best fit/be most helpful to your character and then see which gods apply from their.

I'd say leave your str at 10 though just cause clerics still do fighting when they don't need to be healed or are out of healing and you don't want your character hurting too much on that end. Cha isn't that critical unless your fighting LOTS of undead or have the feats that use cha bonus. So i'd just keep it at an average to average+ while keeping high wis and decent con also. Con is good but remember you can put full plate and a shield on a cleric but wis will always be more benefitial due to bonus spells.

I'd also suggest taking spell prodigy or whatever that FR feat is that is awesome but must be taken at 1st level.

Also look into the weapons of the gods and see if theres af favorted that you think fits with your character too. I know one god has a broadsword that is an interesting twist you don't see on every cleric who mostly have to use something like a mace.

That's Spellcasting Prodigy and it is INVALUABLE!:D

Depends on what you see yourself doing. There are number of FR deities to choose from, each with their own special domains. If you feel inclinded towards healing, Chauntea is one solid choice. Another is Lathander. (Healing and Renewal work well in that respect) But realistically basis your following on your idea of what your character is about. Is he/she more of a warrior follower or a hunter of peace, promoter of goodness etc type deal. Then work from there. Believe me, the new domains in the FR book are well worth looking at. Two things to keep in mind, if you think you'll run into undead, make Cha your second highest stat. Wisdom is ALWAYS your first. Dex is probably the weakest stat. Str secondly so. I hope this has been helpful.

Yes it is. In one of my games, I'm playing a human Wizard/Cleric of Mystra. Took that feat for both Wizard and Cleric @ 1st level...has helped out quite a bit.

Well, more than that actually. What it does is treats your primary stat for spellcasting as +2 for the purposes of spell DC and for Bonus Spells.

Mmm. Need a psionic version of that-- though, of course, it's a prime candidate for renaming.

As for Domains, Knowledge will help you access more "wizardly" Prestige Classes, and I think Animal or Plant will help you get into Druidic ones. Trickery will help you with Roguish PrCs, especially if you take a level of Rogue or two.
