Clerics can get Brew Potion at level 1?

First Post
Hey everyone,

Thanks so much for all your help in the past and my first game is going pretty good so far!!

So, the Cleric was choosing rituals and told me he could choose "Brew Potion," a level 5 ritual, at first level. He says, he can't use it yet, though. I couldn't find it anywhere, so he refers me to the DDI Dragon article "Cleric: Essentials."

So, yeah, it says he can choose Brew Potion at level 1... here are my questions:

1. Is this published in any other source? Couldn't find it in the Payer's Manual or Heroes of the Fallen Lands. Is it in Divine Power?

2. I think so, but is this Brew Potion the only exception to the rule "your level must equal or exceed the ritual’s level"

OK, that's it... think this may be easily answered/the answer is obvious, but I want to know how you've dealt with such things that were published in Dragon but not anywhere else.

Thanks :)

Hi,

Yes you can choose brew potion at level 1. The only potion I believe you can brew at level 1 is a potion of cure light wounds that is in Mordenkainen's Magnificent Emporium. Do you have the compendium? It's there if you don't have the book handy.

Btw, the level 1 cure light wounds in that book is better than the level 5 healing potion of old so you might want to check it out anyway.

Btw, the Brew Potion ritual is from the original Player's Handbook, where it was listed as a level 5 ritual I believe. That was later errata'd down to level 1... If I'm not mistaken. It might have always been level 1 but had no potions that could be brewed till level 5, at least until Mordenkainen's Magnificent Emporium came out last year.

Hope that helps!

Just to back up Moorcrys, Brew Potion was changed to be a level 1 ritual. There is only one level 1 recipe I believe, the potion of cure light wounds.

Thanks so much for your help!

I didn't know about the Potion of Cure light Wounds in Mordenkainen (which is a book I ordered recently but have yet to recieve).

Luckily, I have a DDI subscription so I was able to look it up in the compendium. Do you really think it's better than a lvl 5 Potion of Heal?

Cure Light Wounds says: "Instead of the hit points you would normally regain, you regain 1d8 + 1 hit points. If you are bloodied and don’t have any healing surges, you still regain the hit points."

I guess the latter part is what makes it better. Heal potion will give you a flat 10 HP but it won't heal you if you're out of Healing Surges.

Thanks so much for your help! I'll pass this information on to the Cleric ;)

If that is a level 1 item, I wonder how many high level guys try to buy 50 of them and just drink 10 whenever they are out of healing surges. 5d8+10 should net you around 55HP, which is not bad for someone who had no healing surges left.

Can "need to urinate" be a lasting effect? You know, treat it like a curse. Every turn they roll a saving throw in hopes to prevent the increasing chances of wetting their pants.

That's a pretty smart idea. Not sure if I'd allow it during an encounter, since drinking one is considered a minor action. I might allow a character to drink 3 in one turn if they forfeit their move and standard action (possibly more if they use action points).

During a short rest, however, I guess they could drink as many as they'd like. Nice little potion for emergencies B-)
