clerics

Clerics are primary spellcasters that have few weaknesses. Terrible skills (although some good social skills) and poor Reflex save. That's about it. They have some good spells - not as great as a wizard, but of course the best healing spells in the core rules except anti-poison spells and some great buffing spells. It's like they're second best at everything (except skills), whereas the bard is just capable of everything (and possibly second best at skills).

Well,

I've never considered the Warlock as a good alternate arcane caster. They DO make excellent alternative archers. That is in my opinion where they really shine.

Except that they are even better than archers, as they never run the risk of running out of arrows.

Even a quiver of Ehlonna only holds 60 arrows, or barely enough for a high-powered archer to last 10 to 15 rounds.

people around here say the cleric is overpowered. why do you think so? im palying a cleric in my current game and it does not seem all that powerfull comperd to the other players at all.
All of the arguments why clerics are overpowered sound really good on paper (pixels), but I haven't seen them as overpowering in campaigns. The Divine Favor/Righeous Might/Divine Power combo can add up some nice bonuses... if you have time to cast them all... if you only need to do it once or twice a day.... if your fighter hasn't done anything to optomize himself for combat either.... if you also take feats to back this up at the same time sacrificing the other things you can supposable domate in (ie. spell focus and penetration feats to match a wizard). With an optomized fighter in the group, the cleric is better off supporting the fighters strenghts and covering his weaknesses (protection from alignment so that he isn't mind controlled and turns on you, Greater magic weapon/Magic Vestment, freedom of movement etc...)

My actual experience has been that the cleric is at best (I forget the bard quote) 'character of many skills but master of none'. As such cleric is seen as a support character which is the last character declared after Wizard, Fighter and even Rogue.

5/ However, the Cleric's most powerful class feature is: no class features after 1st level. You can take a Prestige Class and lose nothing.

Uhm... moderate BAB, two good saves, d8 hps, turn undead, spellcasting, some domain abilities, ...

Cheers, -- N
this sounds more like the wizard, the only thing he loses is the extra feat every 5 levels.

Here's the real question - how many of your spells go toward healing?

Many times the 3rd Ed design team has said that they built the cleric to be the most powerful class simply because people seemed to have an aversion to playing the walking medical kit. But what I really think they mean is that they created the cleric to be about as powerful as all the other classes even while using most of their spell power to heal the party.

Somtimes I look at the cleric and say "you know, if you cut their spells per day in half and took away healing from them, they'd be just about right."

People think Clerics are overpowered for one reason, that can be summed up in two words: Divine Metamagic. Take persistant spell and divine metamagic, and of course extra turning, and you can buff yourself for 24 hours a day, every day. Throw in some of the other divine feats, and you easily outshine the fighter in combat.

No, actually they said so already before the feat was written. ;)

Not really. The topic has been bandied about since the 3.0 players first came out.
