Cohort Vs. Followers

Maybe it's only my bad english that is giving me a headhache, but what's the difference between a cohort and a follower? The cleric in my campain already has a cohort that gain 50% of his xp. Next lvl he will be able to attrack 5 1st lvl followers. What does they'll do? Do they gain XP too?

thanks...

Cohorts are loyal (almost fanatically) adventurers.

Followers are the folks who run your castle while you are away, and things like that. Followers who are allowed to come along on adventures and actually help in any way other than holding the horses and the like, die.

Think about it. 5 1st level followers go adventuring with their 10th level leader. Can you say "slaughter?"

Simple problem, simple solution.

Also, keep in mind that followers, unlike cohorts. may come and go based upon your current leadership score and, by inference, will leave if they are too high a level to be your follower any more.

If it helps, a definition of Cohort is:

Cohort: a supporter, accomplice, or associate of a leader, especially one to whom special treatment and preference is given.

Also, it should be pointed out that while cohorts can be of any class (or even monsters, subject to DM discretion), followers can only be warriors, commoners, or experts.

personally for cohorts i would say that they are loyal enough to stick around if their level gets to high. i use the cohort level as a starting point, often as a way to introduce new pc's (if the player can handle that) or allowing the player to have a second character (can cause problems for some) for adventures that do not quite fit his original character. if the cohort outgrows his cohort status ie outshining his leader a couple of times, or the player begins to play the cohort more often then the leader, his status as cohort is gone and a new cohort can be recriuted.

without concrete rules regarding such this has been my solution.

Is it somewhere in the rules that a cohort will leave his/her master if his/her level surpasses the leadership of the master?

As I recall, the rules explicitly deny this. The real question is, "what happens if the cohort's level exceeds the character's?".
