Combat Speculation

I wouldn't use the term 'stance' so much, but I would definitely play it. I'd also feel quite confident that my ability to turn that into an exciting fight would be much higher than with 3e: it looks fast, with each player doing something exciting all the time. Maybe WoTC should call you up... ;)

No, no I would not. The problem I have is the people who said combat in editions pre-3e was just simply hit each other till dead. Those are the people who are unimaginative and have to have every option spelled out for them.

Combat mechanics are an abstract way of giving and receiving damage. A fellow I work with loves his 3.x monk and being able to snatch arrows out of the air. I told him we do that in our 2nd edition game as well. When asked how I explain that if an arrow misses an AC I tell the character to freely come up with a description on what happened.

One of my players likes when Aragorn bats aside the thrown dagger in the LotR movie. My characters don't require a feat to do so it's just simply if their AC is missed they are free to say that their character deflects the thrown dagger with his sword.

Hmm..ok

so there is an Arcanist, Divine and Martial base class

each class level they get 1-3 'artifice'from 4 types: General, Arcane, Divine or Martial.

Each artifice is either
passive (ie is an always on bonus) ,or
innate(in that it can be used each round), or
surge (in that it can be used once each encounter), or
adrenal (in that it can only be used once until a character rests/sleeps/meditates etc dependent on race and such)

these are heavily 'chained' so the
Martial Artifice: Surge: Charge (a move up two twice base rate ending with a +2 attack bonus) leads up to Over-run, Bull rush, Speed, Rush, etc. Martial Artifice
Arcane Artifce: Innate: Energyblast ( a ranged touch attack that does d6 damage at 'short range') leads to Energyblast II, Sickening blast, Fireblast, Ice blast, Stunning blast etc Arcane Artifice

at 6th level you can use two actions per round, at 11th you can use three....etc....so for example a level 7 martial character can use Martial Artifice: Surge: power attack and have a normal attack in one round.

There is no need for AOO. Just ensure you are using the General Artifce: innate: Ready Action and you can hit the next taregt that comes into your reach, fire an arrow at the next person to start spell use etc....

They are basically hundreds of different artifice and you build your own unqiue class that way?

Simple yes. But also boring.

I greatly prefer for (a) the character that can bat away arrows to be harder to hit because he has the ability and (b) for it to be a cool special thing that THAT character can do.

I like the mechanics to actually enhance the game.

What you have described is a work around that might be cool the first time, but gets very ho-hum in a hurry.

Is this pure speculation? Or is there some source saying that 4E is going to work this way?
Okay, next time I'll read the title of the thread first... :o

Character Powers are to be sorted into at will, per encounter and per day.
Vancian 'spell slots' will be reduced in how much they control a caster's total ability.

.....oh my speculation was prettty good then....
