Well, since you have to touch the turning character, the limit is probably 8 assistants. That's the maximum number of medium or small creatures that can surround a single medium or small creature (unless they're flying, of course).

that would be a seen, the army of the jack of tears (scared lands monster manual 2 (i think)) fended off by a chuch in 3 flying clumps.

The Undead War, hmm, that'd be a cool event or history event in a campaign.
