Common High-Level Tactics

Re: Invisible Spell + Obscuring Mist

You don't want to hamper your own guys. For example, say you have some invisible stalkers. Now, their main advantage (invisibility) is blocked by a simple second level spell that every spellcaster and his grandma can prepare. Put in the spell, and suddenly anyone with the bright idea of casting see invisible has wasted their turn *and* become less effective. Not to mention, you completely screw over anyone with permanent true seeing. For a first level spell and a +0 metamagic, that's not bad. A scroll is only 25 gp. At high levels it's chicken feed.

Combining it with guards and wards lets you protect your entire base.

...Wow. :D It really will block True Seeing! I believe we have our next Time Stop-Prismatic Sphere-Reverse Gravity trick! I simply must drop this into my next combat in... well, either game. :)

Where is Invisible Spell from, though? I checked several books and haven't found it yet.

Cityscape. It has a few other interesting things in it (like the favored feats). Don't have it myself, so I don't feel justified on recommending it just based on word of mouth and a couple of neat bits.

I'm not the best tactician, so my "high level tactics" are virtually the same as my low level ones, but with "bigger guns."

That being said, I am planning on making use of black tentacles followed up with a cloudkill. Trap the enemies, then poison 'em with the cloudkill for a couple rounds (a couple 'cuz I'm hoping their dead by the third round).

Better yet....Cloudkill/Forcecage (10' windowless box).
Alternately....Create Water/Forcecage

Okay, I am slightly confused by this. At first glance, it only appears to protect the party vs. creatures that are seeing invisible stuff, either by spell or naturally. Do Invisible Stalkers have "See Invisible" active all the time? :confused:

I see how it would mess up True Seeing and such, though. Nice.

Basically for fighting other PC classes or stuff like Glabrezu which have true seeing on all the time.

As noted in other threads, one common high-level tactic for PC's is "Buff-Scry-Teleport."

What are other things that players tend to do with high level characters?

* Common Combos
* Common Feats & Manuevers
* Common Tactics for Wrecking DM's Carefully Thought Out Plots

Wizard casts Projected Image, moves image above enemy's camp. Casts 4 Delayed Blast Fireballs that all go off in round 5 along with a Meteor Storm that same round.

And of course the one somebody else mentioned in a different thread. Prismatic Wall in front of a moving ship.

Thanks,
Rich

But it doesn't doesn't block Gust of Wind, another second level spell that everyone has so it doesn't really hold up well into higher levels.

I once had a Mystic Theurge use Explosive Spell (from CA, I think) on his area of effect spells, like fireball, to push the PCs through his battlefield control spells, such as blade barrier. It was brutally effective, since they took damage simultaneously from the fireball and the blade barrier. You could combo Explosive Spell with a lot of things, I imagine.

Here is a great mid-high level trick for druids:

Transmute Metal to Wood+Repel Wood

Magic items get SR, mundane items don't. Once someone's armor is converted to wood, use repel wood to push the poor SOB right off a cliff, into a prismatic wall, etc. I did it to my PCs on the edge of a lagoon. The PCs had their armor converted to wood, got pushed into the lagoon, then the Druid shapeshifted into a Shark and reenacted scenes from Jaws. TPK. It was beautiful.
