Comparing Potential Systems for a "Serenity"/"Firefly"-based Campaign

Massive thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions.

At this point, it looks like we're going to go with Savage Worlds for our Firefly "test run," using the PDF fan conversion that Amerigo linked to (thanks again!!).

The pleasure is all mine. If you have questions, pop over to the PEG boards, they will take care of you!

Oh well. Next year, I plan to run Serenity using Mongoose Traveller, so I'll report back then as to how it goes. :)

Cheers!

So, is it all "Mongoosed up" or did they actually playtest this game? I keep hearing good things about it but usually their products are very frustrating.

Since it is fairly close to Classic Traveller it has like 30 years of playtesting.

Ok, I want to say the first printing of the core book had a few typos, but I'll admit there isn't anything that makes the game unplayable. I believe that Mongoose's quality has gone up over the years, but I will admit I haven't checked out much from their other lines except Traveller and Earthdawn (which is only distributed by Mongoose, all the writing/editing/layout is done by Red Brick.)

If you have ever liked Traveller it is well worth checking out.

I picked up Mongoose Traveller and my gaming group had a blast rolling up characters one night. We never actually played the game but the rules look pretty straightforward and I wouldn't foresee any problems with it.

I've never played Traveller, so I have no opinion of the game. But 95% of people that I have ever talked to about Traveller has said the above. One of these days, I will have to roll up a character for gamer cred purposes.

I played briefly in a Gurps-based Serenity campaign before becoming too busy to continue.. it worked well because combat is only a minor part of Gurps. I played a snake-oil-salesman conman with ridiculously high persuasion, bluffing, and computer use rolls who got through combat encounters by selling them things. I even changed the name of the ship to include an advertisement (the ship registry ended with "ask about our managers special") without the other players knowing. They were livid when they found out. It was fantastic.
