So I just got a bunch of DoD minis, and some are great, but others are just lame. It seems like the black highlighting (wash?) would greatly improve a bunch of them. I've never done any mini painting (which is why I'm buying prepaints), but is that easy to do? Could I just take a mini and dip it into a bowl or something?

Better to brush it on. Its easier to control, and your minis won't look like they fell into a barrel of sweet crude, like many of the D&D minis. Grab a bottle of black paint and a medium brush from your FLGS. Dip brush into paint, then into some water to dilute, then swish swish swish. Some brands, like Games Workshop's Citadel line, make an ink wash specifically formulated for this kind of thing, but you still need to water it down or else it looks too glossy when it dries.

You could also try Dipping the miniature. With normal miniatures, this can be incredibly useful, at least according to the sources. Haven't tried to dip DDM minis, yet.mkozlows said:

However, mkozlows mainly talked about an inkwash. But DDMs have an oddity in this regard - since the colours on them are not acrylics, it's hard to do an proper inkwash - normally, the acrylic paint will stain and "soak" it up partially. On DDMs, this doesn't happen, the ink just flows into the crevices and will try there. Looks less smooth than a quick-and-dirty wash on an acrylic basecoat. Since the stuff used to dip clings to basically everything, it will most probably work better than a normal inkwash. I think I have to experiment a bit, the next time I get some dip material into my fingers.Kunimatyu said:

The first thing I thought when I saw the mini set was the lack of apparent detail because of no wash or whatever. I am no painting expert but the minis such as the Fen Hydra, Giant Centipede, Gnoll Marauder, Grick and OMG! the Orc Raider and the Troglodyte Bonecrusher! They appear to have detail in the moulding but you cannot see it because there is no wash.
So I will be using some of the more common ones to trial some form of washing (or whatever) to highlight the details. Last time I did this was about 20 years ago on some lead samurai for wargames, and on them I just dipped them they had no colour just a wash. They looked good but for DnD minis.....all help gratefully accepted. Will look up L.T's links.

The Grick is a travesty, both the model and the painting.
Compare it with the one from Giants of Legend, it has less colour and just looks terrible. Both figures are common, but it's clear a lot less effort has gone into the DoD one than the GoL one. If you are going to do a re-release, you should at least try and improve, either in the modelling or the paint job, in both cases the new Grick is far far worse than the original.
I picked up a booster the other week and was really disappointed in it.

I have a copy of the wyvern, and its base was warped right out of the box.

lol. At least my reaction wasn't unique. All I could think when I saw the minis is, "what happened?" They look like they fell in a time warp and re-released the old Harbinger set. They are that poorly sculpted and painted. The comparison is even worse when you compare ones that have been re-released.

They are all inferior in paint job and sculpting to the previous versions. I may just skip these guys completely and wait for the next set except I need some iron defenders for my 4e Eberron game.
