Complexity in D&D: Grapple

I am making a "cheat sheet" of rules that I commonly need to use by copying and reformatting parts of the SRD. The grapple rules take more than a page after some serious reformatting (to save space) and using a 9 point font. (about a page and a half at this point)

No wonder I can't keep them all in my head...

I actually think it is helpful to have such detailed rules so everyone knows what to expect. But still...

We went through an excercise while learning 3.5 (we are still learning btw), and had a nice long discussion on the message boards at my site about grappling with grapple. Yeah, it's complex, but what I did was forced the weenies to grapple the heros in an effort to reinforce our discussions on the message boards. Grapple to us is now quite easy after only a few session sof doing that.

Sean K Reynolds had a nice document on it... but it was 3 pages long!

I'd love to see yours when done if you don't mind sharing.

I have one of those too. They call it a DM screen...I got mine from Paizo.

I think grapple is one of those effects that you sit down with your group and practice a few times they'll become comfortable with it. Practice, Practice, Practice!!

yeah,
I thought about doing that, but wanted to make my own instead. Is the DM screen pretty good?

I _would_ like to know how they got all the grapple rules on a screen. I just don't see it taking up less than a full page if you want all of it...

I think you might be over complicating things a little bit.

Grapple:
AoO
Melee touch attack
Opposed check (BAB+Str+Size)
- win, damage and grappling
- lose = fail

What else do you need at hand, really? If you are just copying the SRD word for word, that's not a cheat sheet, that's a copy, and does not work any better than the source material as a quick reference.

I like the Paizo screen, it's got lots of handy stuff on there, but it is Eberron.
