So I was reading another thread about halflings being screwed when it comes to weapon choice. It is completely true. My halfling ranger bowman with d8s for damage dice seeths with fury at the tallfolks' fancy d12 greatbow. I also remember the good old days of Basic D&D when halflings got +1 to hit w/ all ranged weapons (and back then a shortbow & longbow did the same damage, only the range was different).
So here is a new Superior Weapon: The Compound shortbow
+3 to hit, 1d10 dmg, Range 15/30, Small
This weapon is used by the rangers who patrol the Five Shires and by mounted archers, who cannot use longbows or greatbows. Their recurved craftsmanship make them especially able to punch through armor and give them as much stopping power as a longbow, though less range.
