Conan The RPG: Impressions + Ideas & GM Support

My hat is off to you IC, I dislike NPCs tagging along with the party IMC, as I always forget about them. I like some of your ideas though, and will give this a try sometime.

Like someone else pointed out, I tend to believe (without having read the Conan rules yet) that combats in Conan might actually run smoother than D&D combats, due to the lesser focus on spells and magic items. Plus I've always preferred human(oid) combatants.

HOW MY GROUP (2 DMs) ALWAYS HANDLED NPCS:
As we only have ever had 1-3 players at most (usually 1-2), we've always liked having NPCs along, as both DMs and players. It never occurred to me that this was not the way everyone played until coming to ENWorld, LOL.

The players would very often run allied NPCs in combat if the GM got too busy or stressed, or didn't feel like it. The Gm still RPed their speech and overruled PC decisions for the NPCs if necessary, but this was generally not an issue, as the PCs often genuinely cared for them and would thus play them intelligently and have them retreat if badly beat up.

NPCs give the DM an easy device to drop hints, exaggerate or mislead, they fill gaps in party strength (such as a cleric or rogue when nobody wants to play one) and serve as springboards to further adventures as well as provide subplots/side quests important to the NPC. Having a few fun NPCs along really makes for a good time for all in my group, and allows the DM to have one or more "characters" in case he ever gets to play, to test out different class combos, PrCs, spells, items, or whatever. As long as the DM's pet NPC is treated like any other NPC (meaning he's not suffering from deus ex machina "Elminster Syndrome" and is subject to death and misfortune just like anyone else), there should be no problem. They also help bond the player characters into the world, and to each other. In fact, when such NPCs die or endure hardships, if the bond was particularly strong between them and the PCs, it can make for some fantastic drama and memories. I remember many long-running allied or otherwise friendly NPCs as well or better than my own characters. Many times the PCs would brave all kinds of extra hazards and even death just to rescue a favorite NPC! Sometimes, we'd want to start a mercenary company, run an organization or church, or work with some large group, and the only way to do that was to use tons of NPCs, often in the party. It was a lot of work, but it always resulted in a lot of extra fun, and danger. Those are generally the campaigns I remember the most fondly.

BACK TO THE CONAN RPG:
Having few to no magic items/spells or monsters to deal with makes it easier, yes. It all boils down to common sense and clever real world combat tactics. Even if there is a sorcerer or monster present, very likely there will only be ONE, and that makes it easier, too. Plus, the reduced number of spells available to cast (and the ability to casy whichever your Power Points allow that you know) makes spellcasters easier to manage. They get ridiculously hard to remember, let alone handle, in D&D!

Just got mine today (curse you Amazonnnnnnnnn!)... and I really like it so far. There are mechanics in here I'd want to use in my own books, the ultimate compliment.

There are now free pdf downloads of tables for all kinds of Conan races by character class levels 1-20, up on the Mongoose Conan page and in the forum (forum link below).

This takes the burden off the CM ("Conan Master", my own personal term, LOL) and saves literally hours and hours of work. The tables are by Vincent Darlage, ENWorld Conan d20 guru and author of the upcoming Hyborian Gazetteer for Mongoose, ROAD OF KINGS. Not having ready-made NPCs was a big problem for me with the rule book, but now that stumbling block has been removed, thank Crom!

Scarlet Blades is a new Conan RPG fan site that is quickly shaping up to be a major resource for NPCs and critters (with more stuff to follow). Highly recommended; each NPC comes complete with a detailed background capable of serving as springboards for entering your campaign, so they are ready to go, go, go!!! :D

I just got my heavily discounted Amazon copy yesterday, too! Now I have TWO copies of this book, which is really ideal for my group, as we have two alternating DMs. Plus, it allows the players to look up stuff in one copy while the other is in use by the GM. The other DM and I split the cost of both books.

You might think I am crazy, but I think I am going to use Torn Asunder in our Conan game. :)

I also I plan on using Fields of Blood at some point as well. Id rather use that book in a lower magic world than say the typical worlds I usually DM, like FR (which I still like and will run).

I will say this though; we have a core group of 5 or 6 players that are very experienced in D&D and other rpgs. I have not seen the guys this excited about any gaming product in a long time as they are towards Conan.

You might want to check out my Conan critical hits systems (I have two different ones, including a fumble table):

SUPER-CRITICAL HITS (NEW)
The effects are by damage type (bludgeoning, piercing, slashing). Each type inflicts a bonus effect on a critical hit in addition to the damage multiplier; this "super-critical" can be negated by the foe making a saving throw. Also, it allows you to use Fate Points to activate even more insane brutality!

Full details here: http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1194

There are two different systems in this next thread, one by another poster and one by Iron_Chef (me). Mine includes a Critical Fumble table as well.

Quite the reverse, I like Canada very much and if the UK ever goes down the plug hole, I'll be a resident :)

Well, if that ever does happen--and while we'd love to have you over here, not at the cost of an entire nation, so let's hope it doesn't--and you end up in Halifax, there's a seat at the table waiting for you. Right now doing some military special ops with a homebrew based on d20 Modern. Can u dig it?

We have little control (!) over what Amazon does, so I am afraid you must take issue with them. However, Amazon _does_ have copies of Conan.

Well then, I'm just going to have to hunt down those responsible at Amazon and open up that can of whoop-@$$ I've got in the cupboard. I mean, I've got a player over here who is waiting to decapitate someone. Personally, I'm more interested in carousing, but that's just me.

Thanks for the news.
