D&D 5E Confused about 1/3 spellcasters multiclassing

According to the multiclass rules on p164:-

"Once you have the Spellcasting feature from more than one class, use the rules below"

1st and 2nd level fighters and rogues do not have the Spellcasting feature (and are not yet actually eldritch knights or arcane tricksters).

1st level paladins and rangers do not have the Spellcasting feature either.

The rule also says:-

"If you multiclass but have the Spellcasting feature from only one class, you follow the rules as described in that class."

Meaning, do not use the multiclass Spellcasting rule.

So an eldritch knight 5/paladin 1 would not count the paladin because a 1st level paladin does not have the Spellcasting feature, therefore this PC has the slots of a single class eldritch knight 5.
