Conventions -- Why do you go?

I've been going to several conventions as of late, and after each one, I'm left a bit flummoxed and would like a little insight.

So, I've got a question... For those of you who go to conventions, why do you go?
To go and hang out and drink with people I only get to see once a year. If I can fit in some gaming, that's cool.

Are you just going to small local cons that usually only draw in the 'off' kind of gamers? If so, then that there might be part of the problem. I pretty much stopped going to local cons, and save up to go to big ones. Meeting up with friends you don't normally get to see, and gaming on a very huge level is worth it. I missed Gencon last year because it was too early in August for me to go, and I felt like I missed a lot.

For me, it's mostly to game, though hanging out with friends is a close second.

For example, I only play CarWars at GenCon. It's also an opportunity to try to play game that I would otherwise never play. This year, I'm playing Deadlands (the original), for example. I also try to play games that I would not normally be able to play, such as Reaper Warlord, Canvas Eagles, etc...

And of course there are all my friends from ENW, CM, DF, and other boards I meet and greet each year at GenCon.

It's hard to fit it all in.

Now, as far as other Cons, I have attended the LGGC a few times, and I really appreciate the laid back atmosphere and old school vibe going on.

1) To actually *play*. In my home groups, I'm the DM; when I go to conventions (large or small), it's to actually be a player.

2) I go to one or two big conventions a year (in addition to several smaller ones); at those, a big part of the draw is seeing friends that I don't get to see often (if ever) otherwise.

Now, there's a regular gameday I go to pretty much three times a year in North Carolina mainly to reconect with a bunch of friends and acquaintences that I never had prior to ENWorld.
Henry loves us.

Seriously - that's another reason I enjoy the NC Gameday that much, I get to catch up with folks like Henry that I only get to see once in awhile. With smaller conventions/gamedays it can be easier to have a serial game going at, so it's a little less of a one shot. In fact, come to think of it, I think most of the good games at the NCGD are serial games.

So... tell us, why'd you ask the question in the first place? In need of an invite to a *good* con?

I go to game, alot. Its a chace to game for almost 72 hours, with nothing else to worry about. No work, no wife, no daily routine. Get up, find a game, play till I passout, get some sleep (usually not a whole lot) and then get up and do it again.

Its also a chance to hang out with my friends, since I have moved its a chance to game with my old group (gamed with them for 10 years before moving 3 years ago). I also have gamer friends that I have met at the Con I attend yearly and only see the one time a year, some of them for over 15 years now.

Iv'e recently also started using it as a chance to play other games that I haven't gotten to play in a while.

Oh, and I do a little shopping at the small dealers room they have.

One thing to add, the Con I attend is a local con that focuses on gaming. (they average about 2300 guests total each year) They don't have guest speakers, or costum contests or a lot of the other things some of the bigger cons have. They have a varitiy of RPG's, Board Games & Mini's games, they also have a group from the SCA that do lectures and Demos, and a few semiars/disscussions about gaming and the industry.

The dealer's room. A chance to compare and see and hold potential buys before laying out cash (and frequently being able to ask the designers questions).

Seminars about upcoming products, Q&A's are good especially from companies who listen.

Meeting up with friends and all discussions gaming that come about.

Buffalo Wild Wings (well, that's GenCon specific I guess).

As my wife and I play RPG's about 6-7 times a month, the last thing we do when going to GenCon is play games!

I used to go to GenCon SoCal, I'd meet the same friends each time and we would play a few games. I would always make a point to try a game I hadn't played before, and run past the auction looking for deals.

It was also the only place I would play in RPGA games, as it seems that my regular game schedule doesn't permit the time to run Living Greyhawk games.

With the demise of GenCon SoCal, I have not been to any conventions. I was hoping to hear from my Arizona friends to see if they decided to go to a different convention in the Southwest somewhere.

Can you still go to a convention just to look around and watch people play or would it not be worth going if you just did that?

I've wanted to go, but I don't really care to play in any games. I'd just like to see what the hype is all about :)
