Conventions -- Why do you go?

I go to cons to:

- check out the dealers and products I don't normally see or hear about

- play games I don't normally have time or enough players around to play at home (Advanced Civ, I'm looking at you here)

- play with people I don't normally play with

- play Living Greyhawk

- get in touch with the general gaming zeitgeist

- see the sights of gamer culture

I love the whole thing!

- Socializing
- Gaming as much as possible, especially games I do not get to play at home! Where else can you play Scooby Cthulhu!!!! or Jonny Quest Cthulhu.
- The Dealers Room, trying demos ,and finding that one deal or oop item I've been looking for!!!
- SWAG...Nuff' Said!! ;)
- The hot costumes, the booth ladies...
- The great food...Can you say "The Ram!" (at Gencon) or the "Farmers Market" (at Origins)
- The list goes on and on for me personally. As someone above mentioned, it's my time away from work, home, wife, kids, bills, etc... to unwind and recharge the batteries.

- Oh, one more thing..I'm one of those geeks that acutally get a kick out of meeting those B Movie/TV show celebs.

To me, why spend your $25+ just to spend the whole weekend playing games you always play anyway? I understand if you don't have a regular group and this is the only chance you get to play, but that can't be for most people.

Or... maybe it's just me...

As I stated, because I play games at Cons I normally don't. In the rare case I do play or run a game that is in the normal rotation in my gaming group it is to a) game with specific people, who I don't normally game with, b) run a game for others who don't get a chance to play it, c) A & B.

Besides, who cares? So what if I go play D&D at a con like I do every weekend at home? Is the bad-wrong fun? Beats the hell out of waiting in line with a bunch of fatbeards who can hardly control themselves to get an autograph and forced smile from some celeb.

To socialize, meet people with the same hobbies who I can relate to.

To meet people who make games and trade ideas.

To see gamer chicks in chainmail bikinis.

Where was this picture taken? I must be going to the wrong conventions.

Hm... looks like cosplay with video game characters not tabletop games... so yeah - I guess you *do* go to the wrong conventions. ;)

Drop by the ENnies booth when Xath is staffing it. I think the videogame conventions would be hard-pressed to do better.

Oh, that's just what she wants -- a bunch of gamer-geeks coming to ogle.

I'll be sure to say nice things at your funeral

You're right... I should have thought that through. This is right up there with me writing to a member of my gaming group's work e-mail to ask him for a hash connection last week.
