Converting bard-only spells

Ciaran

First Post
In my campaign, I've rolled pretty much all PHB spells into a single arcane class, the Magician. There are a few Bard-only spells that I'd also like to add to the Magician spell lists, but since Bard spells have a different level structure (1-6 instead of 1-9), it's hard to gauge what levels to peg these spells at.

What level would you rank each spell at (from 1-9)?

* Confusion, lesser
* Glibness
* Good hope
* Modify memory
* Song of discord
* Sympathetic vibration

Oh, bard spell level * 1.5, round up; so.....

* Confusion, lesser: 2nd
* Glibness: 5th
* Good hope: 5ht
* Modify memory: 6th
* Song of discord: 8th
* Sympathetic vibration: 9th

Almost none of the other bard spells match that ratio. In fact, the vast majority of bard spells are available to other casters at the same spell level. Certainly none of them are 9th level spells for other casters. So your rule of thumb doesn't work at all.

Lesser confusion seems equivalent to a 1st-level wizard spell (it's on par with the 1st-level cleric spell random action from 3.0), and good hope looks to be around 4th level. I'm not sure about the others, but they'll definitely need to be assessed individually rather than by some general level-conversion rule.

Remember something about the Bard, he's not a full caster... So his spells are generally going to be weaker, or available at a higher level than his full-caster counterparts. Since this is a Full-Caster using the bard spells, some can be ported directly over, since he should now be able to get them at a lower level due to losing some of the bard abilities.

I did a Bard-to-Full-Caster conversion a while back, I'll see if I can find it and show how I placed those Bard-Only spells.

Anyway, to put my money where my mouth is:

* Confusion, lesser: 1st, due to its extreme limitations.
* Glibness: 6th, on par with mass suggestion
* Good hope: 4th, on par with crushing despair
* Modify memory: 6th, for its power and flexibility
* Song of discord: 7th, on par with mass hold person
* Sympathetic vibration: 6th, just slightly above transmute rock to mud
