Converting Creatures from Other Campaign Settings

Well I think following the summon nature's ally progression makes more sence, I'm willing to humour your continuum fetish if it'll make you happy. :p

The question is do we want to close the gap down or up?

Close it up. I think the monolith should be at least 9th-level.

When a healing spell forms a Living Ash out of the ashen wastes, is the creature only temporary (emerging for a few rounds and then disintegrating back into the wastes) or is it a permanent creature?

That's an excellent question! Unfortunately, I have no answer. :erm:

If it's temporary like a summoning spell I'd be happier with a lower level version.

If it's up to us, I'd go that route.

Also, I'm wondering whether the entire Ashen Wastes is one really big Living Ash, and the healing spells only "wake up" comparatively tiny portions of it. Maybe they're antibodies released to destroy destructive Positive Energy infections?

I'm terribly unfamiliar with the Dragonlance source material from whence this came, but that's a great idea for genericizing it!

Let's make it temporary and go for the lower level spell equivalency.

Let's stick Cleon's antibody idea in the flavor text!

OK, antibody's going in. ;)

So, you guys favor the following?

2nd: Small
3rd: Medium
4th: Large
5th: Huge
6th: Greater
7th: Elder
8th: Monolith

Summon monster durations are usually 1 round/caster level. In this case, should it be 1 round/spell level? Or just pick an arbitrary caster level for this effect?

I'd be tempted to cut the Monolith, but that looks OK.

For the duration, I was thinking until 2d12 rounds after the source of the healing magic is destroyed or leaves the Ashen Wastes.

I'd like to keep the monolith, and that "8th" should be "8th or higher". It doesn't make sense that more powerful magic wouldn't trigger some response.

Agreed on "8th or higher."

I thought the point of the duration was to make it possibly collapse (triggering death throes???) while the party is still around. How about 1 round per spell level but the collapse triggers the death throes? Does that work for you, Cleon?

No objections to collapsing death throes.

We could have the higher level spells conjure multiple living ashes, inspired by the elemental swarm spell?

5th: Huge
6th: Greater
7th: Greater plus 1d4 Large
8th: Greater plus 1d4 Huge
9th: Elder plus 1d4 Huge

Epic would then be monolith plus 1d4 Huge or something? Or get rid of monolith? In any case, this is an interesting idea, and I'm fine with it if Shade is.

I was thinking more Monolith plus 1d4 Elder.

A Huge Living Ash would be negligible in comparison to a Monolith.
