Limit the number of rounds per day or times per day for thermal riding, and I'm ok with it.

I prefer the idea of them rocketing across the sky for long periods myself.:p

I guess that's reasonable, but then take away the Run? I'm wary of adding too much for this one.

It's only an extra couple of words.

Thermal Riding (Ex): A bestiary dragon can direct the blasts of superheated air from its flying inferno power to fly at twice its normal speed when taking a charge or Run action.

Although I think if we give it that we should cut down its base fly speed - maybe to 60/100/150 feet instead of 100/150/200 feet?
 

Once again, we're straying a bit far from the original critter. I'm OK with adding some sort of ability, but don't want to hamper the standard fly speed in the process.

Is there a particular reason you really want this particular monster to fly on thermals? It seems the source material just suggests a serpentine dragon that throws off heat.

I just like the idea of a jet-propelled dragon. Since it only throws off heat when flying, it wasn't much of a stretch to imagine a serpentine version of Gamera.

My preference would be to go back to the model were it has a lower fly speed if it's somehow forced to be "flame off" rather than the current "booster rocket" approach.
 

Frankly, I feel like we're getting a little too far from the original critter. I don't mind adding some abilities, especially when the original is a little boring, but I think this one has enough. I think I like thermal riding as is, just with only the boost to charge actions.
