Conveying Information to Players...

The old Star Wars RPG (West End Games) explained the use of pre-designed scripts to introduce information, set the mood, and get the players headed in the right direction.

From my experience, the players really loved it and it was a great idea.

The best part is when each person is required to say a line with something really dramatic or emotional, there are usually huge smiles and chuckles all around the gaming table. Also I recommend giving each person's words a distinct personality; such as one person who makes sarcastic remarks, one who makes hostile remarks, one who speaks with long complicated words, etc.

I don't recommend producing this digitally unless he has a real digital studio setup - background noise is a killer in digital recording - one of the prices of clarity, tape hiss hides a lot.

As cool as the idea was, I probably wouldn't have tried it this time anyways; neither my brother nor I are familiar enough with the software to do something like that with it.

If anyone wants to do this on a regular basis I recommend picking up a used 4 track for around $100 dollars, three speach quality mics (about 20 dollars each) from radioshack, about a dozen sound effects CDs, about a dozen or two instrumental albums with classical, jazz, celtic, regea (sp) and rock styles, and a two stand alone CD players (walkmans).

The total investment (using used CDs) is around $300.00 which it pretty high but if you're going to use it alot then it's worth it. I personally use this equipment all the time. When I make a random encounter chart I also make a random encounter CD with each encounter having a corresponding track on the CD. I am also in the process of making a magic CD which will allow the casters to play sound effects from their laptops when they cast spells. In my case it was well worth the investment, in most cases it would not be.

As far as production goes it should only take you a couple of days of tom foolery with raw tapes to be able to figure out how to do it.
