Coolest Cult in D&D History?

I'd have to say the worship\support of Vecna. Its been a reliable source through 4 editions. She's not a god so its not a religion. etc etc.

Could you guys make more of a case for why your cult is the coolest, rather than saying the name?

ie. The Cult of Zargon is the coolest because it ruled over a ruined, buried civilization where the albino populace was whacked out on hallicinatory drugs and decadence.

I'm just fishing around for the elements that makes a D&D cult great.

My favorites are the Cult of the Reptile God from - you guessed it! - Against the Cult of the Reptile God and the Brotherhood of the True Flame from Al-Qadim.

I define a "cult" in D&D as being different from just a small religion. Rather, it needs to be either a religion of a non-divine figure, or otherwise be a non-recognized church for an established deity.

In that regard, I think the coolest cult is the Risen Sun heresy of Lathander's church, in the 3.5 FR sourcebook Power of Faerun. It was nicely detailed in its beliefs, timeline, and central NPC. The fact that it rose up to become the new face of the religion in 4E was pretty cool too!

The cult of Tharizdun.

Why? Cause you can't beat worshiping an entity that seeks the ultimate destruction of EVERYTHING!

A strong second place to the cult of Kyuss, cause worms are icky.

I think Zargon's cult definitely wins points on coolest / ickiest subject of cultish adoration. I mean, Zargon himself is nasty, in all senses of the word.

But I am a sucker for cults of entropy and annihilation, like Tharizdun's cult. There is very little that can be worse than destroying everything, after all.

Oh, whoops - missed this.

I like the Cult of the Reptile God because I like the Reptile God's style and MO - she has, slowly but surely, forced people to follow her will - even the clerics! Also, the idea of flushing out the cult, then battling its sinister patron in her swampy lair just has lots of cool pulp goodness. Everyone knows reptile men are eeville!! ;)

The Brotherhood of the True Flame is similar in that it's got some pulp flair. They're basically assassins who worship an alien fire god, complete with the whole indoctrination by intoxication and promises of nubile young women in the afterlife. I also liked how the adventure path in A Dozen and One Adventures used them as an adversary over the course of the path. The Brotherhood's fortress - Krak Al-Niraan - was this cool castle in the middle of the desert, with a beautiful poster map.

Also, in my town, there's a street called "Kossuth" street - Kossuth being the name of the elder elemental god of fire. I want to move to that street. :)

Vecna is a deity. Born a mortal, became a lich, elevated to demigod and later lesser god. Vecna has been a pretty iconic D&D deity/uber-bad-guy, so I'd say the cult thereof is definitely way up there.

Personally, I was thinking of whatever cult Blackleaf's player was in :D
