Need was created by Mercedes Lackey... it can be found in the series "Oathbound", "Mage Winds", and "Storm Warning", plus the single novel "By the Sword".

Need is an inteligent longsword. Massive Ego, in DnD terms. It's thousands of years old (At least 3,000 years old by the time of Storm Warning, by best estimation... even it doesn't know anymore how old it is). It has a number of special abilities... healing (Very powerful healing), the ability to "take over" it's wielders body and impart to them incredible fighting skills, the ability to offer almost complete immunity to magic, and a few other things.

SLIGHT SPOILERS FOLLOW

Need was created by a female Mage-Smith after the temple she worked in/for got raided by a blood-mage comming to steel away the young girls to use in blood rituals. Only the smith and one student remained, and the one student wasn't ready to take on a task that large, and the mage smith felt she was too old and would be a liability. So she took one of her greatest creations, which she had been planning to give to the student anyhow eventualy, and cast one last spell upon it. She heat the blade up and enchanted it to recieve a spell, then clamped it in a vice and flung herself on it as she cast the last spell, binding her soul into the blade.

By far Needs greatest "power" is the fact that she is 3,000 years old, and has a TON of knowledge she can impart to her wielder, or whoever else might happen to be around to listen. Even if they don't want to hear, sometimes.

Because she was created to rescue women, when she "falls asleep" in times of low magic, only that basic desire is still there... When her personaility is asleep, the sword can only act on a sort of instinct... it won't harm a women, and if it senses a woman in need, it tries to force it's wielder to rescue them. A women of very strong will CAN over come this, but it's apparently not something most of her wielders have been able to do. When it's awake, this isn't a problem, as the inteligence in the sword realizes that such basic commands aren't a good thing :)

In all truth excalibur is a weak sword.

What?!? Caliburn weak??? Its name means Cleave Steel, for crying out loud! It goes through plate armor like a lawnmower through wet cardboard! True, Merlin says (according to Malory, here) that the scabbard is worth seven of the sword, but that's just to show how absurdly fantastic it is: if it beats Excalibur, then it has to be something else.

Oh, one more thing: nice to see someone who can distinguish the Sword in the Stone and Excalibur, for once :)

/Feliath - likes Malory; also Arthur ;)
