• NOW LIVE! Into the Woods--new character species, eerie monsters, and haunting villains to populate the woodlands of your D&D games.

Core concept or rule that just bugs you beyond your ability to put up with it?

Easy solution - low-light vision is dazzled by torchlight, darkvision is heat-based & only works in darkness so ruined by torch also. This solves the problem and is actually _more realistic_. :)

Sure, the Wizard 5/Cleric 5 can cast fireball to deal 10d6 damage, or cure serious woulds to cure 3d8+10 damage, just like a Wizard 10 or a Cleric 10. But so what, the Wizard 10 is casting cloudkill or empowered fireball, and the Cleric 10 is casting raise dead or mass cure light wounds.

I personally think the multiclass character gives up more than enough when he trades off his access to the higher level spells and higher-level spell slots in one class for the lower-level spells and lower-level spell slots in another. Reducing his overall caster level as well just makes him even less effective.

Well, there's already two fixes for that. The Mystic Theurge, and the feat practiced spellcaster.

It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction...

The entire magic system.

Hit points (though I usually put up with those).

Elves, dwarves, halflings, half-orcs, half-elves, gnomes, orcs, and beholders.

Alignment.

Experience Points.

Probably a few other things that I just cannot put up with. And usually don't.

Oh, and if somebody could explain to me how a Reflex Save helps you avoid damage from a fireball going off beside you in a bare room, that'd be great.
*sniff*

My hero :)

Actually, I'm not a big fan of d20 as a whole, so I find a lot of things I don't like, but put up with for my (excellent, excellent) group. But I lack the time to write my own system, so I'll have to wait for one to come along and be noticed by me. Maybe TriStat will do it? I'll be able to see it in the Game of Thrones RPG.

Among other things that also have been said in this thread: Initiative. Everything takes the same amount of time (a standard action), just because we must divide combat into rounds.

Why not start on your initiative, and then add the amount of time for your action, to see when you're next? Stabbing with a dagger might cost 3, slashing with a greatsword 7 poinst of initiative, so you could stab twice (and 1/3) before the other guy gets to slash.

I dislike the magic system, too. :)

Spell level doesn't count to overcome SR....that's bothering me! :]
It's just as hard to resist a Wail of the Banshee as it is to resist an Acid Splash  why?!?!?

Vision never bothered me... well till now

A fireball is not a uniform dispersal of flame. Instead, it is a burst of flame that has hotter and cooler spots in its area. The Reflex save allows you to find one of those cooler spots and avoid some of the damage inflicted by the flames. If you are really good, you can find a narrow spot devoid of flame and twist your body into it.
