You could say the exact same thing about anything else that costs a reaction, e.g. hitting someone who turns their back on you to turn away.
The (re)action economy seems a little stingy that way, yeah. ;)

Maybe just making a save would not have a cost,but for a cost you could get a bonus to your saving throw .
Sure. Maybe if there's a plausible defensive reaction, like dropping prone to avoid some of the damage of an AE, you can expend your reaction to gain your proficiency bonus to the save?

Classes that already have proficiency in the save are just so good at such tricks that they don't need to spend the Reaction.

Classes that already have proficiency in the save are just so good at such tricks that they don't need to spend the Reaction.

In fact, they're so good that they can drop prone to avoid AoE without winding up Prone afterwards. They are Heisenprone. :p
