*cough*splutter* kobolds with 180 and 300hp???

The Whiner Knight said:

D&D Gnolls are hyenoid, but Terry Pratchett's gnolls are a humpbacked, omnivorous species of troll (which means they are silicon life forms).

That's not entirely accurate unless in some book after Thief of Time he's said they're trolls. In the first book they're described as a 'nasty type of rock goblin', and Pratchetts trolls just eat rocks and stuff; the city gnolls seem to eat any form of garbage at all, whereas trolls cant digest organic material. In fact, they could well look hyaena-like but the few times they get described the buggers are so filthy you just can't tell :P

Your main point is a good one though; WotC versions of creatures are not necessarily the one true way. Although very similar in some ways, I think the Iron Kingdoms trolls in the Monsternomicon are *far* cooler than the MM ones, mainly because they don't have that silly nose :)

EQ kobolds are nasty, ugly SOBs. Of course, my highest level character after 2 1/2 of infrequent playing is a 27th level ranger, so you might want to talk to someone who plays more.

Useless trivia: In the old 3-books-in-a-box version of D&D, gnolls are discribed as being a cross between gnomes and trolls. Go figure.

This topic does remind me of a DM who liked to scare the party by including an occasion otherwise normal goblin who had 50-100 hp.

Let me kick in with the "EQ Kobold != D&D Kobold".

My name is Mike, and I'm a recovering EQ-addict. I've been clean for almost a year now. :)

Anyway, I fought kobolds in the deep, dark forests surrounding Erudin. They're wimps. I cut my teeth on them while protecting an egg-headed friend of mine (Erudite Enchanter). That's the closest they come to a D&D kobold.

I've fought the kobolds in the sweltering hell known as Solusek. They're much tougher, smarter buggers. And they're usually smart enough to remember you if you feign death. (I played a monk. I could solo them once I got into the mid-40s, so that's about level 18 or so in D&D terms. It helped that I was a guild monkey and had great equipment.)

Worst of all, I've fought the ice-spawned kobolds of Velketor's Laboratory. They're tough, vicious, and fast. They have more lasting power than the toughest barbarians and they require entire parties to reliably clear. (OOC: At least six people in the 50+ range -- that would be low-epic in D&D terms. And heaven have mercy on you if you don't have an enchanter.)

Everquest is actually a decent game system. And the best part is that you get rid of the annoying people that tried to spoil it for everyone else.

btw Meepo how did you make that Iconic thingy, you made it, someone made it for you or you found it somewhere?

I've been targetting for a iconic Formian for a while :p

*nod* Hi, my name is Sejs, and I too play Everquest, though I will admit that I havn't seen the EQRPG stuff yet. EQ Kobolds are furry, doglike (-very- doglike) semi-upright, not terribly bright creatures. The little ones, like the tribes that live in the Steamfont Mountains and Toxxuila Forrest are little more than a nuisance for most adventurers. Young warriors and casters cut their teeth on 'em, that sorta thing. About as challenging as your standard D&D goblin. There's a large, well organized tribe on the Isle of Odus, called Clan Kolbolk that live in a dungeon called the Warrens that are a bit more dangerous, but not too bad.

Then we go on to the Greater Kobolds. These come in two types: those in the Eye of Solusek, and those in Velketor's Labrynth. The Solusek Kobolds serve as the exterior guardians for the lair of the outcast fire dragon, Lord Nagafen. Nagafen and his fire giant servants have been breeding these furry little monsters for hundreds of years to serve as protectors and soldiers. As a result.. they're big, they're mean, and a decent number of them are spellcasters. The other type of badass kobolds are the Icepaw. Servants of another kind of outcast, this time it being a very powerful, quite insane storm giant wizard; Velketor. Unlike Nagafen and his kobolds, Velketor didn't really bother breeding his fuzzy minions, instead he used them as the basis for a number of his 'experiments'. In the end, the Icepaw Kobolds came out much smarter, faster, stronger, and better than they were before. Along with his bevy of crystaline spiders, ice golems, and ropers, they serve as Velketor's guardians.

The Icepaw Kobolds, and Solusek Kobolds would be the ones you're seeing with 180 - 300hp.

the funny thing about all this being, EQ Kobolds are radically different from their D&D counterparts... but the gnolls are pretty much the same on both sides of the fence.

I just copied someone else's Iconic picture, cut out the picture of Mialee (or whoever) and slapped on the kobold picture. If you look closely, you'll notice that "Iconic" and "Kobold" are in different fonts, but I was hoping nobody would notice. :)
