What kind of stone do you want to give her? If its Sapphires, Emeralds, Tourmalines, Spinel, etc... Anything but diamonds, we should talk. Then you can go get her a ring for $500 to $1500 plus mounting fees.

If you are working on 2 jobs and still can't buy her an engagement wedding ring, you should think better about marrying her.

One of the purposes of marriage is to gather things and not lose them; it's to reach a social and economical status you don't want or can't achieve by yourself. The purpose of marriage is the same since the begging of the human society, the only difference is that today we have freedom to choose our partners, but the objective is still the same, or should be for a successful union. Love has nothing to do with it, it's only a factor to determine the person you're gonna marry, it should not be itself the purpose of marriage.

Marriage is about gaining and not securing or sacrificing.

Don't know about you, but getting a wife seems to be a pretty big gain to me...

Although I have to ask how can you work 2 jobs and still not make ends meet when there is only two of you...?

She wants a diamond. Thats the one thing thats non-negotiable with her. Although she doesnt seem to care too much about the quality of it.

Ainatan, the only reason Im working two jobs is to save money faster. My first job (main job) has been hit or miss for hours due to the shipping of ore boats. We've had bad luck with the limestone coming in on time or at all some weeks (I haul limestone from an ore dock to a mine 15 miles away). I wouldnt need the second job if we were operating at our normal capacity (around 55 hrs a week), although Id still take the second job. And I'd still be selling this stuff sooner or later, it would just be going to something stupid like a PS3 or something else I dont need. Putting it towards a ring is something that makes me smile. I dont consider a sacrifice at all. Plus Im gaining a wife. I'm not sure I share your views about marrige, as far as the purpose of marriage, but to each his own. Thanks for the view though. I can see what your saying, even if I don't agree with it.

I completely agree about the gain. I'm not sure theres a bigger gain than that.

As for the job, my main job is just extremely slow for the shipping season (see above post). And my second job is just a throw-away job, making 7.50 an hour cleaning businesses (the job that I used to do in college). I've finally just got out from under most of my debt, which is why I can finally start saving. I just want to get her a ring, and get rid of most of this stuff (would also save more money as Im going through and trying to empty out my storage unit so I can also save that money too). Trying to better with my expenses.

Hey, I'm not trying to change your mind. That's just the standard devil's advocate shi* I say to every friend that starts talking about marriage. :D
I'm happy you're confident with your decision, that's the most important in any choice we make, even if we are wrong. ;)

Ah. I see. I forgot about the difference in pay scale between here and the States. Down here in NZ, the average pay for a supermarket checkout operator is in the region of 12-14 dollars an hour, depending on your length of service. The cost of living is much higher, though, but you can save a lot faster if you are disciplined about it.

You might want to think about long-range hauling with those 18 wheelers? I heard that is good money over there?

I know youre not trying to. And I do appreciate the advice too. And the good thing is, if I end up wrong and divorced, you can remind me of your advice. :D
