countering invisibility with illusion?

I'd allow it, definitely, and I think it's an extremely clever idea. But, as has been pointed out, you really wouldn't be able to anticipate how it would dodge, or what moves it would use to attack with, but as a marker of general location it's a great idea, so I'd have to say it would effectively have a Displacement or Blur effect, but that's a whole heck of a lot better than being completely invisible :)

I'd do it as your DM did it, in this case. Will o' the Wisps are smart and quick ... I just can't see keeping anything like a perfect bead on it.

On the other hand, if there were a dumb and/or slow invisible creature you tried this on, I'd be more generous ... probably allowing a downgrade of the invisibility to concealment.

I'm with Wilder here.

And if it was a large or bigger creature I'd probably allow something else too. you could use the dancing lights to target the creature, surrouding the creature's body. With a large or bigger creature, IMO that would remove the invibility conditions, allowing the other to attack normally

edit: and grant some extra xp for creativity :p
