Counterspelling Quickened Spells?

Kind of curious now, and I probably have asked this before, but just wondering.

1) Is it possible to ready an action against a free action?

From what I can read, yes you can and how effective is it at stopping the free action from occuring?

2) Related to above, can you counterspell/distract a spellcaster that is casting a free action/quickened spell?

Again from what I can tell, this should work as well, just curious and wanted to make sure (partially because it seems kind of odd to be able to counter a free action with a longer action).

From the FAQ...

Does casting a quickened spell provoke an attack of
opportunity? Can a counterattack or counterspell be
readied against a quickened spell or is it too quick to
identify or counter?

&nbsp&nbsp&nbspA quickened spell does not provoke an attack of opportunity
(see Table 8-4 in the Player's Handbook). A quickened spell
can be counterspelled using the normal rules.
