Crafting golems and constructs

My Wizard ritual caster is wanting to be able to craft golems and other constructs using a ritual. I am not sure how to do that,

I'm thinking of a ritual that only takes a min or two to cast and creates a golem out of whatever is near by, I'm thinking it should last for and hour-ish so it can be used in a few encounters.

But he is looking for the whole wizard in the lab making a golem fro
Stone/wood/metal/flesh etc. And bringing it to life and it being able to fight and stick around until he releases it or it gets destroyed.

I've already planted a hook for them to find this wizard ho is famous for his golem craft unroll he disappeared a few decades ago.

Any advice?

I'd be inclined to look at some of the conjurations that are out there and just reskin them as minor Golems. There are a wide variety at different levels that might make good models.

Alternatively, if it must be a ritual, look at reskinning "Undead Servitor".

I would allow the wizard to create figurines of wondrous power (Adventurer's Vault 1) with the "Create Magic Item" ritual. That's the most flexible way, and they last 8 hours (or until KO), which is decent. This solution also fits into your seed: the character would find the special ingredient that lets him/her make one/some figurines, which is the way Uncommon and Rare items are supposed to be made (at DM's discretion).

My other option would be to look at revamping the character as a multiclass or hybrid artificer, which has a lot of mini-creature powers. Look at the Clockwork Engineer paragon path as an example.

You could make two rituals (or one with two uses). A short-term ritual, as described by you and other posters, and a long-term ritual that has expensive components, a much-longer casting time (perhaps up to 8 hours) and gives you a companion that lasts "permanently". The companion couldn't gain levels by itself, but you could spend money to upgrade it, effectively giving it levels, I would think. The latter idea might be too powerful though. I'm not really sure how companions are balanced, if one PC has one and another doesn't.
