Creating a new weapon

The decision that the player and I have reached is that my version is martial, so it won't require a feat. His version is exotic. We've also made it more 'useful' in melee combat.

frank, are you saying that a die upgrade and an extra 10 feet of range for added to a dagger changed into a martial weapon, and made one handed instead of light is too strong? If it were exotic i think it would be stronger. say d10. keep in mind a dagger is light simple weapon.
A Dagger made into a martial weapon is called a short sword.

Simple weapons are not to used for balancing exotic weapons. if that was the standard, a short sword would 'deserve' a 10' range increment since it is the martial equivalent of the dagger. That simply is not the case. The dagger has a range increment just as the club does. Both are easy to toss. Once either one gets heavier, the throwing ability is taken away and not compensated for very much. Maces actually fare better than short swords.

The throwing axe [light 1d6 x2 10' increment] light hammer [light 1d4 x2 20' increment] and the trident [one handed 1d8 x2 10' increment] are the martial standard for thrown weapons.
