Creating an Island from Scratch...?

A reef is primarily built of coral, and only certain kinds that build hard casings, as opposed to more delicate, deep-water corals.

I agree, the crafting of coral would be an important step in an Island making process. I'm figuring the Druid will have spend 100+, possibly a fe hundred years in the manufacturing of his island, he'd have plenty of time to encourage coral life. Thanks for the education.

Someone needs to research a Transmute Water to Stone spell. Just stand on a boat over one spot, cast it over and over every day, and create sheets of rock out of sea water...

That would also fall under Polymorph Any Object, would it not? Alternatively, there's Ice until a more rock-like substance could be generated.

Polymorph spells do not have the necessary duration. Transmutation spells are usually instantaneous.

Polymorph Any Object can have a duration of permanent of the objects are similar enough. Turning any sort of mineral into another form of mineral means the "Same Kingdom", "Related" and "Same or lower intelligence" categories. This allows for changes in size, which would be very beneficial to this process.

However, I'm becoming attached to the Druid creator idea, so this spell would not be accessible. We'll see what develops.

If you were evil, transmute flesh to stone could help out with the island & reef building...

Hm.. I'm hoping for a character who's a bit Mad, could one pull this off being more crazy of kilter than "Evil" in a traditional sense?

You could be GOOD and use it, asuming you could arrange to ba attacked in the right place. It would take more time than if you were evil, though.

How about using Flesh to Stone to defeat a monster, say a giant dragon turtle? Get a super-colossal one a few miles across and petrify it.

Hmm.... I think I'm starting to see differences between how a Wizard and a Druid might make an Island. This isn't even factoring in alignments.

A Colossal+ Dragon Turtle would have a fortitude save of what, lets see, MM I stats them up to Gargantuan at 36 HD, so Fort. save of +25. Colossal would be how much higher?

As I turn to the Zaratan in the Arms and Equipment Guide (What a random place to find this monster), I'm seeing a Fort. save of +30, but a Will Save of +16. (The Reflex save of +21 is hilarious, "What do you mean the Zaratan ducked out of the way of my fireball spell and is only receiving half damage?") Perhaps finding a way to charm it would be the way to go.

An interesting situation arises if/when the FtS spell is somehow broken. With small creatures, that means small pockets of weakness are introduced in the foundation of the island or reef.

If the Zaratan is returned to its fleshy state- creating instant caouane- that will mean a HUGE subsidence and possibly even total destruction of the reef or island.

This, BTW, is just an observation. This could be a problem for you, or it could be a plot point.

A colossal monster is pretty small for an island. There's a thread somewhere with sizes beyond that, I think you should check that out. No reason you cannot have a turtle dragon ten miles across. Killing it is another issue, whether through petrification or plain violence. Even unpetrified the shell makes a good island...

If a powerful druid is involved you do not need to kill the dragon turtle, you can make a pact with it to allow people to live on its back. The huge beast can be a moving island drifting slowly on the waves unperturbed by the thousands of villagers on its back...
