The XXX are a small fey race somehow related to gnomes, tending the plants of the forest. Generally peaceful, they do act if something threatens their habitat.
A/n XXX looks much like a gnome in appearance, but it is clearly a fey. It's hair is composed of grasses, moss, and short vines, and it's eyes are the color of emeralds. A/n XXX's ears are long and pointed, resembling elf ears. Their skin is usually a brown color. XXXs usually wear simple clothing in earth tones. There are both males and females of the race.
Despite being neutral in alignment themselves, they understand that good creatures are more likely to show respect for the forests than evil creatures, and thus favor good creatures. Yet, they do not show any close ties to non-feys, and among the feys, only good ones are generally respected. Even gnomes are only rarely seen among them, despite their relations. The only creatures really likely to become a close friend of a/n XXX are plant creatures.
Despite their preferences, it is not unknown for an XXX to succumb to evil behaviour to defend the forests, and there are hints that certain XXXs develop disturbing powers, transforming them into a truly evil variety of gnomekin.
While XXXs normally advance by Hit Dice, several of them advance by character class. Most choose the paths of the druid or the ranger.
XXX's speak sylvan, gnome, and elven.
Combat
XXXs usually leave combat to their plant allies, but if necessary, they join combat with either their strange greening poison or their sickles.
Poison (Ex): Poison touch, DC 12, primary 1d4 dex, secondary creature becomes greenish and grows leaves.
Spell-like Abilities: At will - diminish growth, obscuring mist and plant growth; 3/day - barkskin, entangle, goodberry, and spike growth. As a 5th level druid (DC: 13 plus spell level)
Summon Plants (Sp): Once per day, a/n XXX can summon a number of plant creatures, with a total HD of double the XXX's HD, with no creature having more than 1/3 the total in HD. These creatures remain for 1 hour, and cannot use their own summoning ability (if any) for 1 hour.
Gnome Traits: XXXs share a number of abilities with forest gnomes, as follows:
XXXs have the innate ability to pass without trace (as the spell).
+2 racial bonus to saving throws against illusions.
+4 dodge bonus against giants.
Speak with Nature (Ex): XXXs can freely talk to animals, plants and rocks, as the spells speak with animals, speak with plants and stone tell. In addition, this ability allows the XXX to use its Animal Empathy skills on plants with an Int score below 3 (including plants without an Int score).
Tree Stride (Su): Three times per day, a/n XXX can duplicate the effects of the tree stride spell as cast by a druid of 5th level.
Skills: XXXs receive a +4 racial bonus to Hide checks, *which improves to +8 in a wooded area. Also, XXXs receive a +2 racial bonus to Listen checks, for their keen hearing.

Unless someone gives me a good reason to change it, this is the final version of our fey, waiting to be named and given a CR.

I guess I should have done so beforehand :D

I'll put up a limit of two names per poster, to a maximum of 20 names to vote from in the end. (Though I'll end the thread earlier if it seems we won't get that many. :))

What about something built after Dru-Wid ? I like "sylvwid" myself, and it's sort of would mean "forest seer".

From this site:
Early etymologies sometimes translate *dru-wid/druid as "oak seeing." This is a very logical mistake; IE *dru also gives us the word for oak because Oak is a strong wood, known even now for its durability. Modern English "tree," "trencher" and "trough" are all also derived from IE *deru because they are made out of wood, a strong substance. *Weid- "to see" also gives us modern English "video" and "wise."

(The author is wrong on video, which comes from latin, not celtic.)

A joke nickname could be "vegnome", which would echo vegetals for the plants part, gnome of course, and even "venom" (for its poison abilty) because of English's mute "g". It's not how they would call themselves, but that name could be used by other peoples.

It would echo D&D 1's tradition of portemanteaux words, like gorgimera, drolem, boalisk or froghemoth.

It seems I just killed that thread.
