D&D 3E/3.5 Creature Catalog 3.5 Overhaul Project

oh yes, before we move on to the caiveh...

i think it was shade that brought up heights and weights for monsters. anyone want to take a crack at these? astral searcher and the AEM are incorporeal, so they're pretty irrelevant. hamadryad and rapper would probably weigh as much as similiar humanoids.

so that leaves us with:
smilodon (8 to 12 feet)
scaladar (12-foot long)
berbalang (four to seven feet tall)
elder orb (4-6 foot diameter)
lightning golem (about 8 feet in height)
golden ammonite (6-8 foot shell, 12 foot tentacles)
bichir (from 9 to 12 feet long)
feral slasher (3' tall)
ghuuna ("a large gnoll", 8 feet tall)

Well, since I brought it up, here's my take on the height/weight lines:

A smilodon averages around 10 feet long and weighs around 1,500 pounds.

A scaladar is twelve feet long and weighs about 5,000 pounds.

The berbalang averages around 5 1/2 feet tall and weighs around 100 pounds.

Elder Orb - unnecessary; neither the beholder nor the gauth have listed weights.

A lightning golem stands nearly 8 feet tall and weighs 2,000 pounds.

Golden ammonite - unnecessary; neither the kraken nor giant squid have weights listed.

A bichir is 9 to 12 feet long, and can weigh upwards of 1,000 pounds.

A feral slasher is 3 feet tall at the shoulders and weighs around 40 pounds.

This sample ghuuna stands 8 feet tall and weighs 350 pounds.

Caiveh are leonine humanoids that live in tropical regions. They resemble humans with strongly feline features, and are known as lion men by other cultures. Their bodies are nearly covered in long fur half an inch in length, and males will have a thick mane.

Caiveh society is egalitarian, though family life is strongly skewed in favor of the males. A male will typically dominate his family, and often has three or more mates and several cubs. Caiveh often hire themselves out as mercenaries to local human armies. In a military unit, the caiveh will use appropriate human weapons and equipment.

COMBAT
Caiveh are stealthy and well-disciplined fighters that know how to use their natural environment to their advantage. They work well within a group, even if they are cooperating with other races. Caivehs are typically armed with a falchion, handaxe, broad sword, or trident. About 1 in 10 caivehs have learned to go berserk in a similar manner to the barbarian's rage ability. Such a gifted caiveh is likely to go uncontrollably berserk when cornered by hostile foes, assaulted by psionics, or captured and taunted, though he can suppress this tendency with effort.

Rage (Ex): This ability functions for the caiveh as the barbarian rage ability, as if the caiveh were a barbarian 5 levels higher than his current level. If the caiveh is an actual barbarian, his Strength and Constitution bonuses increase by +4. A raging caiveh will disregard his weapons, using only his claws to attack.

Skills: Caiveh receive a +6 racial bonus to Climb checks, and a +4 racial bonus to Listen and Spot checks. * in warm forest or mountain regions, they receive a +10 racial bonus to Hide and Move Silently checks, and their bonuses for Climb and Listen checks improve to +8.

CAIVEH CHARACTERS
A caiveh's favored class is barbarian, and caiveh leaders tend to be barbarians or barbarian/rangers. Caiveh clerics can choose two of the following domains: Animal, Good, and Strength.

OK, the caiveh is an excellent candidate for a PC race. They only have 2HD, so their ECL should make them fairly playable. We need to work up a “Caiveh Characters” section. I picked these creatures to do first since we hadn’t done a good PC race yet. :)

Do you think I handled the skill bonuses well in my original conversion?

I’m thinking of possibly changing up the Rage for something more like the bearded devil’s Berserk Fury ability.

Are you intending to keep the rage ability limited to 1 in 10 caiveh? If so, we'll have to have separate CRs and LAs for raging vs. non-raging caiveh, right?

I like the skills except for the Climb skill improving in warm forest or mountain regions. I mean, if you can climb rocks or trees well in one area, shouldn't you be equally adept in other regions? Maybe I'm just not getting it.

Caivehs are occasionally found working in mercenary armies in human countries in tropical lands. If more than five caivehs are encountered, the group will be a family comprised of one male and three or more females. Caivehs resemble humans but with strongly leonine features. Half an inch of long fur covers most of their bodies, and the males have thick manes that add greatly to the lion image (they are called lion men by most peoples).
About one in 10 caivehs possess the ability to go berserk in certain circumstances. If surrounded or cornered by hostile forces, psionically assaulted, or captured and taunted, a caiveh berserker has a 75% chance of going into battle-rage. If the caiveh tries to suppress this rage, the chance of entering berserker fury drops to 45%. A caiveh in this state of mind has intelligence and wisdom scores of 1, but his strength rises to 18/00, which allows a + 3 to hit and + 6 to damage scores. While berserk, a caiveh tosses aside all weapons and uses its claws alone, with appropriate combat bonuses. Caivehs are quite stealthy by nature and possess a number of thieving abilities, as shown below. Note that the percentage chance given in parentheses is the chance of performing the skill within the caiveh’s native setting. This setting is always situated in a forested or mountainous tropical region.
If encountered as part of a military unit, caivehs use human-style weapons. If a family unit or pride of caivehs is encountered, it relies on the following weapons in order of preference: falchion sword, hand axe, broad sword, trident, claws.
Thief ability Chance of success
Move silently 25% (95%)
Hide in shadows 20% (75%)
Hear noise 15% (35%)
Climb natural surfaces 85% (95%)

*shrug* i did that so long ago i don't remember why i did that. ;)

Actually, I think this explains it:

"Caivehs are quite stealthy by nature and possess a number of thieving abilities, as shown below. Note that the percentage chance given in parentheses is the chance of performing the skill within the caiveh’s native setting. This setting is always situated in a forested or mountainous tropical region...Climb natural surfaces 85% (95%)"

Wow, I forgot that only rogues (er, thieves) could climb walls in prior editions!

BOZ--I like your suggestion of replacing rage with berserk fury. I can go either way on the Climb bonus. On the one hand, it is kind of cool to limit a creature's climbing ability to certain terrain, but on the other hand, a tree is a tree and a rock is a rock, whether it is in a forest or in a marsh.

Here's a height/weight line and a draft for Caivehs as Characters.

Caivehs stand 7 feet tall and weigh around 300 pounds.
