As an aside, I'm pretty sure some animals were listed as Non-intelligent in 2e, and of course are Int 1 or 2 in 3e.
Yes, and AD&D also had animals with Semi-, Low or even Average-intelligence (e.g. the Dolphin).
Of course, it did not have an "Animal Type" in the same manner as 3E, so was a lot more easy-going in how is assigned attributes.
Speaking of types, there's nothing in the SRD requiring the Elemental type to have an Intelligence score, so why so insistent the Vortex has to have one.
I suppose I might compromise my principles and grant Int 0, maybe even Int 1 if I stretch.
